this is honestly pretty much what atproto is "Can We Get More Decentralised Than The Fediverse?" #atproto

every one of these writeups about How We're Gonna Make Decentralization Something Everybody Will Care About reads like the author's primary interest is fantasy worldbuilding
no yeah, Bluesky's got the right idea, it's all these other writeups I see that start from a place like "Alice wants to communicate with Bob, so she spends an afternoon doing research into which Mastodon instance is most closely aligned with her interests"
ah yeah def. we had a design principle from the start (due to many past failures) which was: no steps backward

was just gesturing toward this a few hours ago
the thing I've been trying to articulate about all of this is that there are deep ideological beliefs underpinning the technical incompatibilities between each of the post-Twitter platforms
yeah. I tried to articulate this a few years ago, because the "decentralization" umbrella is way too broad, and what you get from the design process is a bunch of revealed preferences on civic structure because nobody formalized the language (github.com/pfrazee/info...)
always found ssb too client-centric but I do still think there's value in "a social network you can connect with by rsyncing to a flash drive"
alternately, you ditch scale entirely and fully embrace the "peer-to-peer" aspect, where each peer is 100% manually controlling the aggregation of every document to specific peers. very useful, for a specific set of use cases. calling it "social" networking might be a misnomer
