I got assigned a server when I signed up, a server which had nothing to do with any of my interests. When I was able to switch, the process was, quite frankly, hellish and I lost a bunch of stuff (not that I had much). Then there was the copy/paste to follow somebody on a different server. Ugh.

Maybe some of this has since been streamlined, but the whole process was way more complicated than I wanted the experience to be. I can, BTW, understand why some (many?) like the compartmentalization, but it isn't for me. And silos don't necessarily guarantee a pleasant experience.

I do really like that we did SSB though, it was the most pure rendition of anarchist philosophy into a technical system there the hard principle was *zero external authorities* and while some of the difficulties around coordination were predictable, the results were still interesting

I spent a few minutes and came to the conclusion that that Mastodon instance doesn't and cannot exist so it leaves only generalist instances. And then I should have spent the afternoon guessing if the management and moderation are ok (and will stay ok) and if the instance is viable long-term.
