The challenge with Attie for the builder community isn't the use of AI. It's the question of whether Bluesky begins absorbing/cannibalizing existing ecosystems within the Atmosphere.

I have no idea what’s going to happen to the application developer ecosystem because of AI coding but I would say the call to action should be for all of us to start utilizing this tech in our work

I’m going to be starting a virtual meetup for agentic personal computing so we can all row in the same direction I don’t care if it’s Attie, I care if it’s the atmosphere

As I said elsewhere I am basically radicalized about this. We fight now for personal computing and personal agency or we lose another decade to closed clouds We push now for an open internet and open models. Nobody is going to hand it to us because they’re nice

The way we use the time and capital we have is pretty fixedly in service of this And there are some questions about where we throw the money we raised or the time we have, which I get The meetings I’m in aren’t about how we cash in. They’re about how to make mission impact

It's hard to read this when the introduction of Attie is basically just feed generation on steroids. This is the opposite of non-algorithmic. I'm not sure how it will be used in the future, but the optics are bad if that makes sense.

I've personally been hoping to see some way for the average person to basically replicate the entire bluesky stack without having to actually write all of the software themselves and maintain all of the infrastructure to the degrees required now. I still don't think I've seen that yet.

@pfrazee.com it's hard to believe you when BSky raised $100m and that money is going to AI companies instead of the indie ATProto dev community. Mini thread 👇

Economic incentives is a big problem with AI in open-source spaces. Finding is unevenly allocated, and AI leads to further disparity. Instead of spreading money around the dev community, it'll go to AI companies. Open source thrives on humans. We don't need rockstars, we need resources.

Running local models on a phone costs zero tokens though. A 500M param model on a £200 Android gives you something real without paying anyone per request.

It costs less than three dollars per million tokens to use Kimi K2.5, I'm a broke bitch from a third world country and even I can afford that much.

Can you use Kimi with Attie? I'm sorry if I'm confused, there's very little accessible information about how Attie works. I wish someone would just link me to wherever I can find the talk.

Also, to clarify, the LLM is only used to create the parameters which curate the feed. It does not do the curating in real time. The token spend is only "as much as it takes to write the filters". It's not continually ingesting the firehose for manual filtering, that would be grossly inefficient.

It's weird how searching for "bluesky grants" and "atproto grants" only turns up 2 bluesky-run programs of $10k total each, both of which ended in 2025. AWS credits don't pay indie devs rents. I'd love to learn more about active grant programs and the larger grants you mentioned.

That's very cool! How did you apply for the grant? Usually grant programs have a main page with a call for proposals and open applications (or at least an indicator of how to apply). I haven't been able to find anything like that outside of these small, discontinued grant programs.

Some grant programs do have that, with Bluesky, that doesn't exist. As applying, initially I wasn't sure if it'd be a grant, freelance work or employment, it was just "hey, this could solve a problem for the atmosphere." that I'd shared with team members who knew my work.

So @pfrazee.com might be able to correct me here but I've gotten the impression Attie is mostly small models and the token spend is basically on the natural language UI, but actually producing the feeds is just database queries
