The challenge with Attie for the builder community isn't the use of AI. It's the question of whether Bluesky begins absorbing/cannibalizing existing ecosystems within the Atmosphere.

I have no idea what’s going to happen to the application developer ecosystem because of AI coding but I would say the call to action should be for all of us to start utilizing this tech in our work

I’m going to be starting a virtual meetup for agentic personal computing so we can all row in the same direction I don’t care if it’s Attie, I care if it’s the atmosphere

As I said elsewhere I am basically radicalized about this. We fight now for personal computing and personal agency or we lose another decade to closed clouds We push now for an open internet and open models. Nobody is going to hand it to us because they’re nice

It's a pick between Claude and Bring Your Own, as I understand it. Which means if you prop up an API endpoint on your own PC, you can just plug in a local model, and otherwise services like OpenRouter can also be plugged in.

Hey Paul. I strongly recommend that you read this essay about “open models.” They can be as exploitative as proprietary models. The huge ethical question concerns capture & use of data for training. “Open” tells us nothing about that. Open =/= ethical. Open =/= progressive.

tante.ccActing ethically in an imperfect worldLife is complicated. Regardless of what your beliefs or politics or ethics are, the way that we set up our society and economy will often force you to act against them: You might not want to fly somew...

The way we use the time and capital we have is pretty fixedly in service of this And there are some questions about where we throw the money we raised or the time we have, which I get The meetings I’m in aren’t about how we cash in. They’re about how to make mission impact

It's hard to read this when the introduction of Attie is basically just feed generation on steroids. This is the opposite of non-algorithmic. I'm not sure how it will be used in the future, but the optics are bad if that makes sense.

I've personally been hoping to see some way for the average person to basically replicate the entire bluesky stack without having to actually write all of the software themselves and maintain all of the infrastructure to the degrees required now. I still don't think I've seen that yet.

@pfrazee.com it's hard to believe you when BSky raised $100m and that money is going to AI companies instead of the indie ATProto dev community. Mini thread 👇

Economic incentives is a big problem with AI in open-source spaces. Finding is unevenly allocated, and AI leads to further disparity. Instead of spreading money around the dev community, it'll go to AI companies. Open source thrives on humans. We don't need rockstars, we need resources.

Reiterating another replier's recommendation that you read this piece. I think you're fetishizing "open" as somehow magically avoiding all the ethical/theft issues that so many people are so justifiably enraged by. (Aka this high-minded language sounds to many like "a different excuse for theft")

What the American government is doing right now is all anyone needs to see to be radicalized about decentralization.

I can see the reasons behind this push, whether I agree with them or not. But then, why not go all-in? Why not make it a fundamental requirement that Attie *only* use open models. From my understanding, the current system is to use Claude. Why not push the limits from day 1?

It's Claude with the option to bring your own model. Which kind of feels like the most viable thing right now? Like. It has to deliver a certain level of quality out of the box and unfortunately there isn't an open-weight provider that can guarantee that right now...

2nd on open models. As someone that repeatedly got screwed over by Microsoft in the beginning of the "Indie games on Xbox" days, tying your existence to a business outside of your control is a recipe for disaster. Anthropic especially has shown they greatly disrespect developers and open source.

Really good question So- we did test it. And the open models are, you know, in striking distance but not as good yet The way we see it then, the interface is very exchangeable, so we build in anticipation of those models catching up to claude. But very open to counterpoints here

Agree with Paul... It's worth acknowledging that most users care about outcomes, not process; using the best quality model is the only way. Also the "api" for LLMs is literally just prose. There has never been SW where it's easier to switch horses. LLMs are lock-in-proof in a way web 2.0 never was.

I think the risk is that the open models, and often unintentionally, become an excuse to keep using the proprietary hosted models and all the stuff that comes along with them. That they exist is a foil to a lot of complaints about the AI industry, despite few really using them

I am curious how you define "open" models, and I'm really not trying to be pedantic here. Open weight? Open dataset? Are you thinking about the implications of building on what courts may determine is stolen work?

Closed models will not stop improving either. This is Linux vs macOS… or accepting the discomfort of rail travel over airplanes. Being radical in theory doesn’t count.

I think personal computing without personal computers is more ideal; the form of PC’s are alienating and don’t allow us to live embodied lives.

subscribe. turns out I don't really care about social media, it's the computational sovereignty that I care about

Might be interested in this, I've been working on agentic workflows lately and retaining any sort of security guarantees around them is definitely swimming upstream.
