BTS announces they will not submit their music for the 2027 GRAMMY awards, following the Recording Academy’s addition of an Asian-focused category: “I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language.”

Their argument applies to the African and Latino regional music categories as well. In this era of Christofascist White Nationalist dog whistles that have pushed "western" to be a euphemism for "white", the regional categories are simply shorthand for "not white".

Yeah, they were pretty obvious about trying to "protect the white folks" on that one. I'm in Tennessee and I can't even begin to tell you the gnashing of teeth and wailing that went on in the local radio stations.

Oh, "European" automatically means "white" dontchaknow. ;) That's why there are also Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music fields, but nothing for other world faiths because that might lead to some Christofascist White Nationalists hearing brown and black people singing about someone other than Jesus.

Gosh! But just think of what fun can be had if we had "best" categories for "Caucasian Pop" etc. Ok... Recording Industry is showing signs of diminishing intelligence...

Artists can still submit for the big “non-ethnic” categories too, the Grammys always have subcategories for genre I think maybe a K-pop designated award eqch year since it’s so prevalent now in the West would be more appropriate rather than making it solely about race however.

Well I guess it has come full circle bc Black Americans have been dealing with people stealing their music Rerecording white people profiting off of it and actually winning over Black artist shut out of the Grammys American Music Awards and any other Awards in the US I guess now people see it

I heard them during the World Cup final halftime show. They are POP, nothing "Asian" about their music. They sound no different than the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC.

They have a 13 year career - you shouldn't base opinions about their music on the partial performance of the only singles that radio picked up. Grammy's are still cooked but their FIFA halftime show was cooked too. Try "IDOL" or "Silver Spoon" or "Spring Day" "Body to Body".

Dynamite and Butter were songs that BTS picked up by super American pop producers as a fun challenge to sing songs entirely in English for the first time. They are great fun but not representative of them as artists.

The music industry loves categories and pigeon hole creating. It’s all marketing strategy … monetizing other peoples’ artworks. We don’t have to cooperate with industry business bullshit. Especially when it is divisive.

and “Old Town Road” is country music, yet the exact same garbage happened then as now: “new” categories Flavor Flav said it a few decades ago, “who give a f*** about a goddamn Grammy?”

Fair, Latino or Asian categories are their way to segregate the rest of the world so they can keep giving the awards to… western or just American artist

BTS paved the way. They have written/produced over 400 songs with group and solo songs spanning genres including hip-hop, pop, rap, rock, and alternative. They are artists with integrity, always thinking outside the box, and they delight people from every continent. They are bigger than the USA.

Creating categories by region is to undervalue the work of artists from other parts of the world; they are just as talented and have great sales.

In America people are categorized based on the color of their skin for every situation. Good for BTS! Their music should fall under a genre not where they are from. This group is international. Hopefully Spanish language artists will do the same. I hope BTS starts a revolution with this act!
