"Yes, this therapy can be expensive,” said Dan Unumb, an attorney and president of the Autism Legal Resource Center. “But solving the problem by denying kids access to medically necessary care is a terrible solution.” propub.li/3VBMgyc By @anniewaldman.bsky.social

Missing the issue of problems with ABA, especially as providers try to extend the treatment beyond what it is capable of doing. Don’t hide the issues of ABA & how they tell parents they are the only solution while taking kids out of education to do ABA. Health fund hate shouldn’t be invoked here.

To be honest I am not a fan of this type of therapy. It wasn't right for my kids but others have told me it was essential for theirs. In any event, an insurance company bureaucrat should not be making medical decisions about a patient they have never seen. They are not qualified.

Denying therapy is more expensive for taxpayers in the long run, but United Health Group only cares about its profits in the short run. CEO needs a new $20 million mansion!

Perhaps next time the reporter will check in with an autistic person about whether they—the actual people who receive the treatment—find that treatment helpful or its withdrawal problematic. Do better.

“They (UHC) have not answered questions emailed 11 days ago, citing the Dec. 4 killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO as the reason.” They wouldn’t be scrubbing their web sites of execs bios & vanity portraits, if they were in the right. They KNOW what they’re doing; it’s behind the fear & misdirection.

Not gonna get upset at United for this. ABA is bs coercion to make autistic people make allistic people feel more comfortable. It's immensely painful and harmful to autistics. And Autism Speaks is messed up hate group.

Are you going to respond to the many, many #actuallyautistic people pointing out this article is deeply problematic and dangerously misleading? I love y’all and you usually do great work. Please treat this as a learning opportunity.

It’s not medically necessary. It doesn’t help any autistic people and it harms many. We know this from two massive studies sponsored by the Pentagon, and from personal accounts from autistic people who were subjected to it (all forms of it).
