You don't have to go back that far. The first half of the 20th century still had high mortality amongst children.

Honestly, I don't know either. But I do think many people have forgotten how often children used to die at young ages. But it might convince a few that vaccines are a "risk" worth taking if they keep their children from dying.

Wish people would understand that prevention is less expensive (and more responsible) than treating the condition. Proactive > reactive.
