This is a surgical tariff strike on the MAGA strongholds of Upstate NY and Michigan. Areas of the states that solidly backed Trump and his Project 2025. Buffalo and Rochester did vote for Harris but overall this is a strike at Trumps support in rural NY. Well don Premier Ford, well done!!!

1. Trump's aluminum tariff is the pinnacle of stupidity. Producing aluminum from alumina is a process that uses huge amounts of electricity. Canada is a major producer because it has cheap hydro-power in Quebec and BC with which to smelt aluminum.

2. Canada exports aluminum ingots to the USA where US companies turn them into car parts, aircraft, aluminum cans, foil, building materials etc. Trump has just increased the raw material costs of those companies by 25% with no offsetting benefit. It must be the world's dumbest tariff.

When he imposed a 10% tariff on Canadian aluminum and steel in 2018, it resulted in 75,000 US job losses. He was forced to exempt Canada of the tariffs in 2019. Wonder what will happen with 50% tariffs? The price of cars, canned goods, everything made using steel and aluminum will go up.
