I think the Atmosphere needs to start talking about renewables given all the AI-related emissions going into the... Atmosphere. I recently purchased the domain atproto.solar. And I'll offer that domain to anyone who's able to run a PDS that operates 100% on solar/renewable energy. Let's chat.

I made atproto.energy and reached out to a local renewable-energy developer here in Saxony to talk about it. Thanks for the nudge, @richferro.com — turns out the energy sector already runs on more open protocols than I expected (VDE-AR-N, IEC 61850, Redispatch 2.0...). atproto.energy/en/

atproto.energyatproto.energyEnergy networks built on open protocols — from a Bluesky post about AI emissions to a case for open protocols in the energy sector, built on the AT Protocol.

The part I like about protocol-level debugging is that it gives you falsifiable state. Capture the before-state, make one bounded change, then re-read the public record instead of inferring success from the client response.

oh wow i haven’t this looks cool. on pds end i was thinking something DIY would be really cool. but something like this could potentially be good for pckt or something

I’ve talked to my wife about getting solar panels for a while lol but I’m super paranoid about running a PDS locally and then something happening to it while I’m away on vacation or something. I’d trust a service like this more than myself to handle load without outages 😅

I've thought about it, but I'm in the UK. It would be a lot easier somewhere that isn't 51 degrees north with several months of overcast days per year.

If it runs on an energy-efficient setup and you get big enough panels, then I'm sure it'd be possible! Would also need batteries but they could help cope with the worse weather too.

Also depends how 'pure' it is - does it count if the setup is net carbon neutral (and pulls from the grid when needed) or does it have to be self-contained?

Yeah, certainly doable but would need a much larger panel and battery than a summer-only one.

Raspberry pi to a smaller anker solix might work well 👀. I have the power blink or turn off here a decent bit and have a few atproto projects and a dev pds that runs off of solar when that happens. Battery is always charged from solar. Runs the pis, and routers for a couple or hours..

If someone really is serious I can get a more accurate time and the model battery later this week. My biggest hangup has always been not wanting to commit and drill a hole through my outside wall for the cable 😅

Nice!! I was also looking at options for a VPS that's run on renewables like brownrice internet, but a self-hosted server is great too! I suppose one option would be to offer the handle to anyone who can confirm their account is on a solar-pds vs locking it to a singular server? idk

I have an unused Jackery + panels collecting dust that I would love to contribute towards something like this! I guess I do have a Pi as well, just nowhere to put them (and it’s too cloudy here lol)

If I had completed my distributed PDS work, we could have one each running different parts of the world. If the battery on one runs out during the night, traffic auto switches to the one in daylight 🤔

not solar, but i live in costa rica and have been talking to a colo company about some inference workloads — our grid is 98-100% renewable depending on the day. we coooould host a PDS also heh

could be cool if there was something akin to mastodon.green where it's a paid membership and a portion off it goes towards the environment

The thing is that data centers have been wrestling with this problem for years, and they had solutions solar panels on the roof, wind pumping in water from the Central city, and then the heated water that comes out being used to heat streets and preheat water heaters because you don’t need to use

drinkable water, and in fact, the waste water could be used for civic services and had been there were even data centers that were built under the ocean because the amount of heat produced would not displace enough seawater to change temperatures The problem is

AI Bros don’t care about doing things right they care about doing things fast so they can get as much money off of the bubble before it burst. It’s the same thing with AI self AI itself isn’t a problem. It’s a tool. The mega companies are the problem.
