this is absolutely correct and the other piece of it is that there’s this little thrill they get from defending the worst views imaginable because it lets them feel like they’re deeply principled about free speech after all, the worse the views they defend the more principled they are, right?

I think the thing the racist prof defenders imply but don't like to admit is there's no benefit to hiring/debating a guy who says mushrooms are created by fae because it's obviously silly but they do think it's worth your time to debate a race science guy because they think he's partially correct

Not defending this at all... But the difference between "mushrooms are made by fae" and defending these obviously wrong and racist chuds is that unfortunately, there used to be a scholarly space for those ideas. They are making the error that since there was space, there should be space.

The thing is, the contrarians, at least in my field, have by and large removed their names from the open letter. The ones who are sticking it out are mostly bigoted themselves (majority are terfs)

Like when Musk at first refused to reinstate Alex Jones on twitter because profiting from the deaths of children was a red line, and then people bitched at him about free speech and Elon said shit, you're right, i almost forgot the joy of supporting the worst people
