The thing I love about baseball is that there is no sport that is as statistical *while also* making a mockery of mathematical certainty at every conceivable turn.

I think at this point, whatever happens for the rest of this World Series, I'll be arriving to a *super hungover* Milwaukee for SMT 🤣

As an aside, I do think word processors are going to be less important for people to have. I think for day to day needs, markdown is going to become the de facto standard, especially since it can be read by so many programs, it's a small file, and it's machine readable.

Just installed my 26-year-old copy of Word on a new desktop. I will never pay subscription fees for software I already paid for. I will go live in a shack in the woods first.

Unless your job requires you to write something formatted, you don't need a word processor these days. I actually think it's highly likely my kids will never learn to use one in school.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

intelligence is knowing that if i ever looked up anything about Magyar, Lula, or any of the other election winners i would probably not be great fans of their politics wisdom is knowing it doesn't matter because defeating the global chud coalition is all that matters for the foreseeable future

FWIW, The Cheesecake Factory is one of the few chain restaurants that eschewed trimming their decor. It has pizazz! It's absolutely silly but it's part of what makes it feel like an experience. A chaotic experience, but one nonetheless!

I cannot begin to describe to people how many times I've been misgendered in my life. When I was working a highly-communicative but mostly faceless job, I'd say it was something like 80% of interactions with new people over email assumed I was a woman.

What do you mean you didn't know PHP existed???? That's like saying you didn't know there was something called JavaScript!

I don’t want to be mean, but maybe we haven’t fired enough journalists yet

As an IT professional - don’t do this. A good phishing testing strategy involves not enraging your users. There’s a lot of better ways to do this that don’t make you seem like a huge dickhole.

this is fucking appalling. i already knew james dolan (who owns the knicks and madison square garden) was a douche but this is next-level. www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

Listen, Chicago Bears, I get it: I also don't like doing any work during the last part of my shift.

I'm pretty sure the winner is in this group. Yeah it's been all women voted out but there are some *really* strong players here. Thiên An is my sleeper. We haven't seen a lot but what I've seen I really like #survivor #survivor51

The problem for cybersecurity enjoyers is that there hasn’t been enough incidents to achieve the regularity and excitement of say, watching sports. Finally, with AI we have solved this

I would probably already be dead if I didn't get access to ADHD meds a few years ago. I'm 100% serious.

Ina Hallström@killedbyproxy.bsky.social

Systematic review relevant to the discourse on diagnoses and meds. "ADHD was associated with increased all-cause mortality, suicide mortality, unintentional or intentional injury mortality, and natural-cause mortality, whereas ADHD medication use was associated with reduced all-cause mortality."

This is exactly why Mamdani is tearing down burdensome regulations. The regulation's intentions may be well meaning but if they stop all progress then they are pointless!

your strategy of actually solving the issue pales in comparison to my strategy of having meetings about it. fuck you!

Announcement: My children's book is under contract with Dead Fox Publishing! They are doing an open call for illustrators (pay is revenue split with me), and I'll share a link to that in the next post. If you know any artists who do spooky, witchy, whimsical art, send 'em this way.

This is such a good point, as someone who has only held contingent/NTT roles for over a decade, I was drawn to Twitter and, otherwise, building relationships online because I was physically unable to build community with my colleagues (either I didn't have an office or lived 2 hours from campus)

The other thing that is missing here is that the turn to online platforms among millennial humanities academics isn’t all about declining opportunities in the academy; it’s also about the rupturing of the possibilities for intellectual camaraderie within the neoliberal university.

Uhhhhhh this seems grossly negligent?

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

The generation that got to buy cheap houses thanks to a postwar construction boom, then blocked new housing construction to juice their asset values is now whining that they have to pay taxes on their unearned wealth. Just breathtaking selfishness.

You should pay property taxes but only when you have a mortgage is a bizarre belief

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.
