It is from this we learn that elective monarchies don't really exist on the Disk, unlike Europe where we've still got a few kicking about

now wondering what happens in a disputed succession, do the particles collide at high speed or enter into some sort of holding pattern? perhaps we need to reopen the bar

I'd say, considering the usual consequences of either situation, this would split a kingon or queeon into two or more particles with the explosive results of splitting any particle, in this case some form of very violent war.

The proto monarch trying to retain their throne would emit a stream of klingons. Meanwhile, the usurper, trying to remove the proto monarch would emit a stream of prions, or, more properly, pryoffs. The pryoffs and the klingons have a runoff and eventually emit a monarchon or a monarchoff.

Superposition; it's one of the weirder side effects of monarch field theory. "monarch field theory" does sound like it should involve large swaths of milkweed, though.

If succession is disputed, one solution is for learned members of interested groups to come together and debate the issue - voting, of course, by a show of hands. This is known as "wave-parliment duality" and is extremely controversial in the field.

The particles obviously know who's the next regent, but *we* don't. Naturally, the only way to settle a dispute is an autopsy of both challengers to find who had the particle...at which point the particle moves on again and renders the challenge moot.
