It’s time this sort of politicking stopped and thinking what’s best for the electorate was central to policy.

We're turning the tide on violence. When I launched my Violence Reduction Unit, it was built on a simple belief: prevention works. One million Londoners reached later, the results speak for themselves.

Fascinating Jeremy, now tell us about the time you cut national insurance twice as an electoral game despite knowing we couldn't afford it.

The only flag just up the road from me has been turned into wet tatters spread over the road in the last couple of days. Nothing left on the lamppost at all. Wonder if it will be replaced?

aremoteviewer@anewlinerelated.bsky.social

The first and second named storms putting the final nail in the coffin for scores of torn and drooping St Georges flags hung badly on lampposts round here. Feels like those responsible may have lost their mojo when it comes to racist maintenance.

Streaming. Forget the companies for a second, Amazon, Netflix etc. Just think about the tech. It’s magic made real.

A new definition of Britishness lands. Let’s find this person and make them the well spring of citizenship. <joke btw …. Just in case>

Dr Mike Ward@schroedinger99.bsky.social

Just saw Josh Widdicombe on Who do you Think You Are. He seems like a nice enough chap, and the history was quite interesting, but it's all twaddle-bollocks isn't it? I mean, if he's a descendant of someone 15 generations back, so is everyone alive today with British ancestry.

This is a mess. For decades, IT has been decentralizing, distributing, separating … and all the time making it harder and harder to maintain, manage, and control. Governance has been ceded in the name of ease and speed. This is where we end up. Yeah, I started on mainframe - why do you ask?

Speaking purely personally, I do not see how I could argue I was using X for some "greater good" of advocacy when the main principles behind X these days are the a antithesis of basic rights, respect, freedoms and democracy. The ROI just doesn't pay off in making that particular devil's bargain. 4/

2028? How stupid are you? 2038 is more likely. Why is this man never held to account for his track record? His record for faking public demonstrations, his record for delivering products years and years late, his record for hawking products that never hit the market anything like he marketed them.

It's legitimate for the EU, the UK, Canada and others to support their Ukrainian ally. If Musk is going to (in effect) assist Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine's allies should sanction Starlink, X and Tesla. At the very least, governments (and people) should stop using his fucking site already.

Many Starlink terminals in Ukraine are financed by Poland. Its Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has put Elon Musk on notice regarding the evolving situation.

No idea why Sky are so excited. Until the punishments are handed down the season means nothing. The game is a farce now, the League table a nonsense because there’s no competitive football till this has been resolved. No one will end today with points so why bother? We might as well wait till August

Exactly this.

Miguel Delaney@migueldelaney.bsky.social

A freak show that emphasised the farce of the Premier League's current unreality The response of City fans, which does complicate some of the discussion I think they are "victims" but that's harder when you're revelling in it (before the win) www.independent.co.uk/sport/footba...

I wasn’t sure how watching the game would feel today. The whole thing just feels so pointless. Not sure how that gets fixed while the appeal goes on. Ideally, i think, they should suspend all city games pending the result. Not really practical. Announce what will happen to the points maybe? #lfc

The dog. Brave protector. Barks at any sign of danger. Like the sound of a leaf landing on the ground. Theres a strange beeping in the night. Does it .. A) Bark to scare off this new fiend? B) bury its head between the pillows on the bed and tremble. The joy of the smoke alarm low battery beep.

BTW, first alert, your smoke alarms are hopefully only removed once every 10 years. It’s not something I do regularly. Oh, and it’s always, always 3am. Make the bloody things easier to remove!!!

I'm sorry if this is obvious but the Tory proposal to exempt family homes completely from IHT will lead to 1] pensioners buying the biggest houses they possibly can 2] pensioners refusing to downsize which can only be bad news for younger families trying to buy family homes

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Judging by the air when I walk the dog, if everyone smoking weed round here was arrested, I would be living in an empty post apocalyptic landscape with only my dog for company.

This is why the Tories are dinosaurs. Instead of exploiting de-criminalising cannabis, bringing over £500billion a year into the economy and focus on addressing violent crime instead they want to tie the police in knots trying to work out who has a medical prescription and who is smoking CBD.

There are models that are trained in exactly this way. People choose not to use them.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

My dad was (technically still is, you never lose the title) a professor of Tribology. Wrote books on it that were referenced when my son went through uni doing materials engineering. Fascinating field of study. And vital. And @gilesyb.bsky.social is right. Nobody knows what it is.

Paying taxes is punishment is it? Some might say it's a contribution to the infrastructure and regulations (like the rule of law) that enables you to build a successful business and, being less transactional, your contribution to society..
