The AI community is SLEEPING on atproto's potential. With all the "on-tap intelligence" we have these days you'd think they'd be faster to figure that out

There is still a strong auto-immune reaction happening here on Bluesky, if you add too much AI, sadly. And it might only get worse with raising inequality everywhere. AI is a fitting scapegoat target for populism/outrage. During the last ("industrial") revolution, we got communism as an outlet...

I mean to be fair it doesn't help the tech community's presentation of this tech to normal people, i.e: job destroying, infinite spam generator, and as a bonus money and power hungry. This is even how CEOs present the tech. The messaging has been awful. note: an observation, not my own views per se

</political discourse> (sorry) I think the trust needs to be earned back by better communication to users (and allow opt-out). I think it's unwise to be completely deaf to this anger. Which is not to say I haven't uncovered some breathtakingly (bad) threads.

atp is an answer to a data ownership/governance question most research assumes data as given, and most devs consider this as a non-issue (the app owns the data)

Yep, for example this paper made big waves on Twitter and in academia but everyone is sleeping on the fact that atp is the best place to implement it

V interesting twist on MCP! “user data is often fragmented across services and locked into specific providers, reinforcing user lock-in” - enter Human Context Protocol (HCP): “user-owned repositories of preferences designed for active, reflective control and consent-based sharing.” 1/

ok! i think network effects exist at the appview & pds layers and that whole apps are just a UI for those two pieces AI can generate mobile apps easily enough, so we could get wild with how we experience atproto apps while still hanging out with our friends online

the official bsky app looks like an android app designed in react my claim is that ai makes it unnecessary: - to use react - to use official apps - to assume one UI for everyone i have dabbled with building mobile apps with AI, but not for atproto. good quality apps can be completed in a day too!

I don't think they're "sleeping" on the potential... the reality is that current AI use doesn't respect the wishes of artists and artists are a rather large chunk of the atproto user base. They'd be bringing a software solution to a platform which actively rejects it and I think they know this

atproto can help create AI systems that are more respectful of data rights, but yes, they are not interested enough in that unfortunately

yes ofc, but there's a lot to _undo_ in addition to build on top of atproto. The AI systems many rely on have been trained on unattributed data, and it's v hard to "invert" a model to attribute its datapoints 🧵

collaborative AI systems trained on consensual data are badly needed but we need to engineer mechanisms that make people want to participate in the first place. Data annotation is hard work with no immediate outcome or reward
