this is such a fun little horror moment in metroid 2. absolutely perfect use of the gameboy's memory limits: you want to get some space between you and the surprise metroid, but the hole you shot to get here has already filled with sand again. you're trapped.

Definitely my favorite Metroid game and I might even still argue for it being the best just in the culmination of mechanics and mood. I 'felt' this one more than any other. Maybe part of that was I was at the right age, old enough to appreciate but young enough not to be jaded, but it still stands.

it's more pleasant on the eyes than NEStroid, it has a bit more depth to its combat and map design (I get lost in a general sense, not mistaking two identical corridors that are right above each other) and it has not one, but TWO remakes to be a contrarian purist about :'D also it has THE BABY

the horror of metroid fusion is vastly overrated. I love that game to its but a horror game it is not, three scripted chase sequences with a savepoint right before don't make me tense up the way youtubers would have you believe lol

I still remember this moment from the first time I played as a kid. Just minding my own business seeing what might be in the sand only to get jumpscared by the "Guess what? It's Metroid time!" sound.

Metroid 2 is wild because for years I heard people repeat that it was too dared and jank to be worth playing, but I played it last year and now it's one of my favorite Metroid games and clears both remakes. AM2R is definitely the more faithful of the two remakes, but I still prefer the original!

what gets me too is that this game technically even focussed more on action than the breezy first game! missiles from the start, boss fights around every corner, you get to crouch or shoot down while falling... there's a reason the promo art for the game looks like this

i love love love this game and kind of think of it as my very first survival horror experience. playing it in the dark, in a moving car, with a pair of cheap headphones, constantly getting lost while developing a mental model of how sr388 is laid out, with a few jumpscare metroids like this?

this is doing actual numbers o.O play metroid 1 and 2, they run on basically every device you own and have filesizes smaller than the clip in this post. I'm sick of talking to metroid fans who played the remakes instead

I could not get into Samus Returns, I just thought the horror vibes weren't right and it kinda just felt like a 2D Prime (though I hear Dread was excellent and that was the same devs?). And then there's AM2R... well, I still think the original is best.

I've played every 2D Metroid, originals and remakes included. I think the remakes have value! That said they're different games than the originals and I'd rec playing the OGs. I liked the way that Zero Mission in particular handled itself, where the original was bundled in on the same ROM/cart.

I think the most telling thing I can say about zero mission is that I was read for it to be over when I reached tourian, but played the original two times in a row when I unlocked it by beating zero mission. that happened in the same playsession.

I won't lie and say I have no fun playing zero mission, but its great controls don't change the fact that they greatly overcomplicated an already labyrinthian map for the sake of turning NEStroid into the beloved super. zero mission should be a dessert for series fans who want more, not an entrée.

if you have trouble getting into them I recommend looking up maps online and scribbling them onto paper a map for brinstar should suffice to get you started in metroid 1, since that's where most of the upgrades live. after that you can get lost without too much frustration this is my final version

for these two games (1 especially) I also recommend people to look at the manual!! they show rough world layouts & for metroid 1 also item descriptions m2 with its hub/subarea structure felt like it was designed to be traversable without a map just fine (it was what i did) so not as necessary there

yes and no. the metroid 1 manual suggest that you go to kraid's lair first, which has a lot more navigation traps and those finicky block "elevators". if you go to ridley first you might get the hi-jump and screw attack in norfair on your way and have way more flow in your playthrough imo

metroid 2 is a lot more convoluted with its map. if you go this route you'll find that there is no true map for that game online because the numbered area maps diverge between websites and even nintendo power etc. disagree. I highly recommend playing it and trying to make sense of it, though.

one of the reasons the map in metroid 2 is so hard to commit to paper neatly is that the areas overlap. you're entering a burrowed cave structure, not a building. I suspect if you were to physically connect printouts of the areas in their ingame connections you'd get a map that bends 3-dimensionally

As much as I really enjoyed Samus Returns and AM2R, neither of them get what's special about the original. As soon as you pull the camera back and start showing more of SR388 and Samus' surroundings you lose a lot of the tension tgat the og game had.
