not sure what DSA should do about this, I don't follow national drama that closely, but for the record "Marxism-Leninism" is a bunch of horseshit reverse-engineered by Stalin to justify his reskinned Russian Empire. about as relevant to the modern US as the Council of Nicaea

imagine saying this about Israel lol. “just send more diplomats to talk Netanyahu around” bsky.app/profile/rpsa...

Remnick: So we shouldn't send weapons to Ukraine? DSA co-chair Megan Romer: No! Remnick: So, just allow Russia to overrun Ukraine entirely? Romer: We should be sending huge teams of diplomats. We should figure out how to negotiate.w

though I will say Romer is very isolated on Ukraine among US socialists by this point (Hasan has come around eg) while that is not AT ALL true of mainstream liberals and Israel

The pro-Israel project was always more geared towards elite persuasion than mass politics, especially outside of NYC and DC; they relied on flying under the radar for normies while appealing to the "serious foreign policy thinkers".

Also it relied on Israel presenting itself as a relatively normal western nation. Netanyahu leading a coalition of absolute freaks and going fuckin Grima on the old orange bastard shattered that illusion. God willing the election in October goes well for the left.

*All* foreign policy politics in the US is about elite persuasion; foreign policy lobbying does not work the same way as domestic policy lobbying - it's not party-polarized, the thinktanks are all different, etc. Even here, that there was mass politics for supporting Ukraine was unusual.

The opening of the Ukraine war was quite fascinating that way, pretty clear to me that Biden's plan was just to do sanctions and wash his hands of the whole thing but public opinion here and in Europe pushed elites hard towards more support

The intersection of mass politics and foreign policy in the US is the CPC releasing stupid statements about Ukraine and then blaming them on interns, or Romer proposing a resolution to I/P that was the same as Clinton's proposal in 2000 and reacting poorly when that was pointed out to her.

I think it's also very important to remember how small a percentage of left of center voters believe some of the crazier things like "Ukraine needs more diplomats" or "abolish the police". In comparison to a majority on the right believing completely ridiculous things like "global warming is fake".

Has Hasan? He's dialed it back since first dismissing the imminent Russian aggression as bloodthirsty Western propaganda, but he's still among those arguing Ukraine must "give peace a try" (cede territory and sovereignty to the invader) www.reddit.com/r/Destiny/s/...

I don’t think she is tbh. Like the DSA IC is still comprised of utter loons, and I have a strong suspicion she gave this terrible take not because she actually believes it, but to avoid alienating the “Putin’s Russia is anti-imperialist in effect” loons
