No Parking in NYC for new buildings? There is a trend: This picked up in mid-2024, and then shows up in approvals after City of Yes was established. This suggests that developers file zero-parking buildings in anticipation of the new rules. * Caveats below

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

This is why the decades-deep Republican paranoia about global government is a real problem (not that I have a solution for it, it just kind of sucks that it exists).

We pretty clearly need some kind of governmental framework that's global in scope for at least some issues; what exactly the scope and powers are can be debated, but the necessity is obvious at this point.

In the absence of that, you'll see more things like operations to influence foreign elections, ordinary US citizens having opinions about what happens elsewhere (and vice versa) and other bad ways to deal with this. "Return to a world where there aren't global externalities" isn't on the table.

Global warming is a huge problem, of course, but it's not the only one with this kind of scope. AI and the Internet generally make it easier than ever for ideas (good and bad) to cross borders, often in ways that govts will want to regulate. International migration is cheaper and more accessible.

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either: 1) Like the fascism 2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy 3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

Trump's anti-intellectual racism is so wild to watch in practice. No elaborate theories about hierarchy or ideology, no deep lore, he's just a simple man who doesn't like people with dark skin.

Big yes, and thanks to @nydailynews.com for highlighting this basic home rule issue! NYC shouldn't need Albany's permission to expand red-light cameras. Red-light running has dropped 80% where cameras are installed. Albany must lift the 600-intersection cap. buff.ly/FlzxACU

Biking in New York (and DC) has gotten substantially better since I first moved to the East Coast. There's a whole network of protected lanes now (more are always welcome) and the rise of ebikes has made medium-distance utility cycling (e.g. commuting) much more appealing.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Been thinking a lot about the recent papers arguing that demographic trends in criminal behavior mean that we are likely entering a period of sustained prison pop declines. I think we may be heading for that too. But I think it is vital to note the role of politics here as well.

Hotels are also a kind of housing we simply don't build enough of, unfortunately. More hotels in more neighborhoods with more varied types of stays could help with this, but we have not really taken that approach anywhere

Fun fact: state law imposes a cap on the number of red light cameras with no justification as far as I can tell besides drivers just wanting to run red lights without consequences. Hopefully Zohran can push Albany to do something about this, because it's infuriating.

YIMBYism is working, it’s just obscured in the topline numbers by the single-family collapse. The California Building Industry Association went all-in on sprawl and insurers had to step in as the adults in the room and say no more wildfire risk, leaving YIMBYs to fix things with no help from CBIA.

Buffy Wicks@buffywicks.bsky.social

Well, look at that. California is seeing a big increase in multifamily housing permits. We passed historic CEQA reforms w/AB 130 to make it easier to build housing & now we’re seeing momentum. There’s still lots of work to do, but this is an encouraging sign. www.ocregister.com/2026/10/08/c...
