A gift from a friend. I had mentioned I was thinking of grabbing the game, and they let me know I could have theirs. I think each book is 600 pages. What was I thinking.

I initially had the same reaction, but they're such a fun couple of books to flip around and follow rabbit holes wherever they lead you. I pull it off the shelf for regular inspiration because of how cleanly it's written. Although if I ran the actual game I'd probably need a month off to study...

Stonetop does a great job explaining all the concepts of play, including fictional positioning. I often feel many PbtA games do a better job at dungeon master advice than your typical OSR game. This is a clear set of examples on how you might adjudicate a situation.

There are so many moves in Stonetop. It seems a bit overwhelming, but maybe in other games all this stuff is implicit rather than explicit. Moves help show you the shape of a game. I learned in Stonetop you might muster a militia for example.
