I just called my reps also and gave him a list of things that have me irritated. I don't know if you have the app 5 calls, but it makes it so easy you don't even have to punch the numbers and get you right directly to their office and I've talked to somebody. Each time.

If all income in excess of $400,000 were subject to the Social Security payroll tax, Social Security’s solvency would be guaranteed forever. We could also expand Social Security benefits. There’s no reason even to consider reducing Social Security benefits or raising the age of eligibility.

Ha, ha, don't be silly. The government doesn't invest your SS withholding, as if they were carefully managing the fund. They assume that future withholding will pay your future benefit. They spend the money carelessly, then complain that paying it back is burdensome, we should just end SS.

No, no ... THIS government. George Bush is a Republican, btw. Talarico for Senate. Gina Hinojosa for Governor. 💙💙 Have you followed the Stock Market at all lately? It's up/down/up/down ... and you're not in on the grift. You DON'T have early knowledge. You DON'T have early tips. THEY DO.

@ossoff.bsky.social Bush jr was ready to do this, then the stocks market crashed in the 1980s. Bush privately 'Thanked God' that he didn't. If Paxton doesn't know recent US or Texas history, he's not worth the space he takes up. What's with Texas's GOP? Shouldn't someone tell Paxton about Bush jr?

Also that math is an absurd fabulation; an utter lie of enormous proportions! 10% of 12.4% (employee+employer's share) is 1.24% of wages. Median annual salary is $65K. That's only $800/year. The US govt owes SocSec >$2.5 TRILLION. And "2x benefits" for all SocSec beneficiaries would = $3.2 TRILLION.

In 2008 when GWBush crashed the economy my 401k lost half it's value and it took years to recover. Social Security is a guaranteed income -- the stock market is not.

Why not offer a choice. 1️⃣ Let gov manage SS benefits. 2️⃣ Allow people to select how there SS savings are invested. Of course, those going with #1 will receive a 22% reduction in a few years because gov mismanaged their $. People in #2 will receive an extra $1100/mo, based on average pay.

Doing this from memory, but the problem with W's privatize plan was the govt still had to pay full benefits to retirees. What W proposed was for the govt to borrow the $$, hand it to today's workers to invest and then the workers had to pray that when they retired, the mkt wasn't in the toilet.

The balance of SS is $2.56 trillion. Charging .33% to “manage” the money in a passive social security mutual fund (~ 1/2 that for an equivalent ETF), would result in $8.448 billion (~$4.2 billion/etf) in fees taken from the pockets of Americans and given to the banks awarded this contract.

The Government needs pay back for appropriating(robbing)the SSA trust fund to pay for Congress’s boneheaded decisions in governance back in the 1970’s & 1980’s that had an effect on where we’re at now in relationship to its solvency,it might not be running out of money. It’s 🐂💩slight of hand by govt.

Wall St investing is a little like gambling. Sometimes it pays off - often even. But the market is volatile and vulnerable to all sorts of things beyond an ordinary investor's control like war & bad economic policy, etc. I don't want to rely entirely on a 401K type investment for the rest of my life

Republicans have been trying to do this for decades. They want to gamble your hard-earned benefits in the casino of Wall Street, where they keep the winnings and you take the losses. Heads they win, tails you lose! Fortunately, states have no say on Social Security.

Why would anyone trust Wall Street with Social Security? I remember 2008 and don’t trust the GOP not to hand Wall Street deregulations that open up the market to greed and manipulation. Which we know this country is no stranger to. Social Security is a safety net not chump change for Wall Street.

Privatize Social Security???? That's the stupidest idea to come down the pike. The way the Stock Market goes up & down? No! What happens to OUR money if the Market crashes? What . . we don't get paid that month? BAD, BAD, BAD IDEA!

AND SS would be solvent if Congress would stop borrowing from it and cutting Medicare benefits. They never replace what they take from SS and never restore benefits they cut from Medicare. They just TAKE, TAKE, TAKE. Raise taxes on the rich instead of giving them more.

That’s a goddam lie! Anyone knows that privitizing a msssive program like SS will distort the markets. Speculators and other vultures will profit hugely, and everyone else will lose. It’s those who need it most who would be stripped of protections from starvation and homelessness! That POS would pro

Texas, do you understand how absolutely stupid you all look to the rest of this country. Ken Paxton is the Republican candidate? REALLY? WTF are you thinking?

There’s an easy & equitable way to ensure Social Security solvency but it requires the wealthy to pay their fair share & the GOP is against that. They’d rather recipients, many of whom need this $ to survive, play the stock market than remove the ridiculously low income cap. Follow the $.

Short lesson. Years ago the government said my union couldn't be trusted with our pension fund. They turned it over to wall st. We had $65 billion. They released it back to our control. We got $5 billion back. Wall Street can't account for the missing $60 billion. You figure it out.

In a normal civilized society Ken Paxton would be in jail, NOT running for the US Senate. But then again, this is what happens when MAGAts take over Texas! VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO 💙🌊.

I would like to have 10% of what I put in to put iron mutual funds. if 90% still goes in for the greater good, why is that a bad thing. I’m not old enough to remember that but I do know that my mutual funds out perform what my parents get from ssn, now. Don’t be rude but help me see the bad in 10%

There are already a number of private retirement products for Americans. IRAs, regular or Roth. 401k accounts. CDs. All of which are dependent on how well the stock market does. SS fills a gap by providing a certain benefit, no matter the vagaries of the DOW. Leave SS alone.

This would involve Wall Street brokerage firms collecting large fees, and gambling with our retirement accounts. In the long run, the stock market tends to go up, but bear markets do happen, and retirees should not be risking the SS income they depend on for their living expenses.

We're to have to start cutting people off from social security and medicaid though. It's going to all run out in a couple years since we don't have enough people paying enough into it anymore. That's a byproduct of a k shaped economy and an expected outcome.

now run the numbers on what happened to folks if they wanted to start collecting SS payments in 2009 and 2010 and not just the recent runaway capitalist wet dream stock market that caters to just increasing costs for basic living needs.

I remember that and it was first proposed by Reagan. It sounded like a great idea & I was for it. Then we had that stock market debacle when we all, incl. me, lost thousands of dollars from our IRAs. If Soc Sec had been privatized, we would have lost everything. Hands off.

People forget (or are not old enough to remember) that right after #Dubya won reelection in 2004, he traversed the county trying to convince Americans that we need to hand Social Security over to Wall Street. 3.5 years later, he crashed the economy, tanked Wall Street & caused The Great Recession.

I can’t wait to get my check WITH compound interest that I can take and invest on my own. If they can charge students compound interest they can pay us our SS with compound interest. I would like to not have to check my balance every month to make sure they haven’t moved it somewhere else.

Never forget 2008. Free Market republicans hated the US Gov't for decades. Denigrated and criticized the fuck out of gov't non stop. Until 2008. I heard the same free market trickle down lying GOP begging, crying, whining like pussies. "Please Mr Gov't, Please! Don't leave us this way!"

SAME THING THEY DID WITH SOCIAL SECURITY.... THE NOW INGRAINED 401K THAT EVERY AMERICAN HAS TO INVEST IN...AFTER THEY BEEN PAYING TAXES ALL THEIR LIFE.. or die. AND THEN THEY PAY MORE TAX WHEN IT COMES OUT. 🙄

Privatizing Social Security is an abominable idea, because if they fail, then they lose your retirement in the stock market, and you get to finish your days destitute, likely on the street. It would be incredibly irresponsible of us to allow our taxes to be gambled away.

Privatizing Social Security has been a favorite Republican policy recommendation for a couple decades. In fact, Republicans have been against Social Security since its inception. They called it Socialism.

Frankly, the only people who should legally be allowed to profit from my fifty plus years of paying Social Security are the ones who share my DNA. Not some half-assed bureaucrats appointed by anyone but me. Wall Street created the Great Depression. No thank you.

Re pic: The US Govt doesn’t manage SS by investing the money—they use it. Every month they move the citizen’s contributions around and pay it back. It never earns interest. And no, I don’t want to see it in the market but I don’t like them misrepresenting the debt either. $110-120B per month!

The devil is in the details. The argument has merit. The execution, unknowable. A better way forward would be to stop capping the max contribution for hi incomes. And at some level cap benefits for high income recipients. Tie it all to inflation.

LTD saved our butts, BUT Aetna pulled so much crap spying, lying and twisting words that is was a relief to take their buyout after qualifying for SSDI, If you have LTD..make sure to read the small print so you are prepared IF the need arises. Record and document every interaction !
