Ken Paxton spokesperson endorses privatizing Social Security

Ron Rule's math ain't mathing because it doesn't account for market collapses that can zero-out portfolios. It also doesn't improve SocSec solvency because the diverted contributions reduce the trust fund capital and interest earnings. Better odds if you trade the family cow for magic beans.

They want us to piss our money away instead of using safety nets. They want us in debt. I don’t have much money, but will have my house paid off a little early and if things break ok I’ll be debt free and own my house at 55. I’m pay check to pay check often but no CCs and no debt. Luck helps

Yes, all you would have had to do is invest. You know, the mass gambling system that only functions by feeding the money of gullible dipshits into it constantly?

Yes in the 25 years since 01 the market did well, but how many more people would have been fucked by a privatization of Social Security when the market collapsed in 2007-2008.

In case, Americans had any doubts: Just look at the state of the British water, electricity, and railways companies. They are in an endless cycle of enshittification throught private profits, followed by nationalization to repair the damage, followed by enshittification throught private profits,...

If they privatize Social Security, I’m going to sue to opt out. I don’t think I should have to, not is it legal to have hand my money over to a random guy undisclosed private money manager that I have no say in selection or how they invest, with likely little to no oversight

One could also put 10% of the gambling money they give to Kalshi & Polymarket into the stock market, and one would make even more money than they lose on gambling.

Sure it sounds good on paper, but in real-life there are the ups/downs of the stock market. It’s just like gambling with your retirement. Not for me, I don’t really trust our government anymore. The Trump Administration has taken care of that for me.

And it will no doubt take all of 15 minutes for someone with proper expertise to completely fuck his assertions with correct data and analysis.

Enron, Bernie Madoff, mortgage loan scam followed by the banking collapse and the Great Recession, the first AI bubble, all of these would have decimated a privatization fund. Any gains made would have been lost during these crashes. Effectively ending this forced savings for elderly retirement.

Lots of bad faith math here. Most importantly, SS is *not* a savings plan, nor is it an investment plan. It’s an *insurance* plan that uses statistical population variances to deliver defined benefits, not risky stock variances to gamble on yields. Different tools serving different purposes.

Turns out that old Thatcher saying about eventually running out of other people’s money was all projection from the capitalist hogs that will eventually take all of it for themselves.

I did check on the "2x" claim. Apparently a study by the American Enterprise Institute suggested that benefits would be 3% and 8% higher than now. But other studies are less optimistic.

And anyway.... 3% to 8% is a long way from 100%. A modest reward for a big risk. And that's from a think tank that was seeking a positive analysis.

Ron Rule is obviously oblivious to the fact that the markets took a huge dump during those years. People would have lost their savings. Privatizing SSCI doesn't make sense, especially when Medicare costs come out of it and there is less to live on when things are already expensive

In the blinding light of the super-corruption and idiocy of Trump, it can sometime be hard to remember that W. was harmful to America and its people. Referencing his ideas as sound is fucking nuts.

They want to tether everyone's future to the stock market, even those who have nothing in it and nothing they can afford to put into it. Once people are forced to have a stake in the market, they're much more likely to accept any action that inflates it and any bailout that keeps it from crashing.

UGH—Social Security is much more like insurance than an investment. You pay into it and if you live long enough, you can begin receiving a monthly annuity for the rest of your life. Transforming that into an investment fund is a terrible idea.

I mean it is literally called Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance It’s literally insurance, people need to understand that and yet they still have some conception of a box in an vault with their name on it

It’s ALWAYS about the money. I worked for a large Wall Street firm for years. The street has been trying to break into the vault of Social Security even before I got into the business in 1986. It would be an enormous mistake to turn the money over to the pirates of Wall Street

The UK tested personal accounts in 2012 — the Parliamentary Budget Office found median earners got worse returns than the state pension they replaced. The "sovereign wealth fund" framing is new, but the challenge is the same: fewer workers per retiree. The math hasn't changed.

He probably would have had the attention of most conservatives until he said recipients would be getting double what they’re getting now. Are we supposed to believe that the government we can’t trust could be trusted to not borrow against that extra money to fund war and corporate tax cuts?

God I hate motherfuckers who work for the goddamn government & then say the government is useless. Fuck them! If the private sector is so great, they can just stay in the private sector & leave government work up to the civil servants who actually fucking believe in what they’re doing! 🤬

so.... what did the government do with that money other than put it in the markets or use it to ensure grandma had a place to live and food on the table? Is there some magic consumer investment that outperforms the government financial management?

No one stole anything. Here's the deal. If Social Security takes in more revenue than is needed to pay current benefits, it is required by law - since 1935 - to invest the excess revenue in Treasury bonds. Money paid for treasury bonds goes into the general fund. Money in the general fund can be and

is used to pay for all government activity that Congress has authorized if Congress has also appropriated funding for that activity. The bonds are always repaid upon maturity or when Social Security redeems them, and have generated many hundreds of billions of dollars in interest for Social

There are better ways to protect social security without risky stock purchases. This guy seems to have forgotten the 2008 banking crisis that wiped out 401k for many people. If you simply remove the cap and tax all income then the fund will be solvent.

Investing in the market is not without merit, but can we stop with this, the government is the worst bet stuff. I get it, some people dislike governments. Many governments do many good things. Just like with the ”holy” private sector, it can get things wrong and right.

I'll take the low hanging fruit for the daily double "The worst bet you’ll ever make is betting on government". Answer: 'What is a ludicrous comment (from a former infomercial CEO) to repost if your boss is running for a govt position)?'

My 401k is tied to the markets... I've lost almost $1000 because of the idiot in chief... it may not seem like alot but when any sort of safety net for the future is minimized, it makes me nervous.

Pretty much every GOP talking point about Social Security relies on lying to people that it’s a savings account instead of money distributed from current collection. Like every other government program.

Everyone knows that if you went back in time and pumped trillions of extra dollars in the market it would DEFINITELY grow exactly the same way it has for the last 25 years. No one would have sold for profit taking, no other greed crashes would've happened. Just infinite growth!🙄

privatising a public service to make it compelled to maximise shareholder profit every quarter is totally a good thing and it always works out for the best and it doesn't result in enshittification

Let me guess. The "market" will quickly become crypto investment. The solution to the decreasing social security fund is to remove the cap on social security taxes. Obvious. But the wealthier are rage drooling to get their paws on all your money, not just the billions.they grift daily.

This reminds me of the opt out of SERPS scheme we had in the UK in the 1980s. You put your state pension potion of your stoppages into a private financial company with the idea you'd make more money than the state pension. It failed, most opted back in!

They forgot the important part. When Bush pushed for this, he must have foreseen the great recession that happened in 2008, where many Americans lost most or all of their retirement funds, except social security. It would have been huge gift to corporations if he could have pulled it off.
