Don't mistake my cautions on mass blocklists — I've been a LONG-TERM advocate for suffocation of engagement as a tactic. Don't even dance on their grave except by exception.

Some random Nazi made dozens of accounts to try to harass me today when blocking malfunctioned, & *still* failed because not one single person engaged. It seems everyone on Bluesky got the memo. React to nothing. Starve them out. They're so desperate for a crumb of attention. Deny them.

I have other issues with shunning 'only' challenging opinions and information, but I agree it's not the job of a social network to force that on you. Just please stop giving dopamine hits and algorithmic boosts to the people who hate you it's fucking empty. It is the fuel they yearn to squeeze out.

⚠️ One of the most important revelations I've ever had on social networks, please read and share if appropriate. Alt text included. I've been blessed to have had a big platform for a long time. I get to see these things.

This is what people don't get and I've been trying to say for years: THEY WANT TO KNOW YOU'VE DISPLAYED THEIR HATE. You _don't understand the fucking calculus_. SHAME DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING TO THEM. Your 1 retweet which gains them ONE follower from your hate-followers IS THE GOAL. THAT IS THE VIRUS.

Further commentary and thoughts on my 2016 interaction with a white supremacist asking me to launder their views to my audience through my denigration and self-satisfaction. Alt-text included.

This reminds me so much of little kids. If they don't get the attention they crave, they start acting out because any attention, even negative attention, is better than no attention at all. So don't respond. Don't feed their need no matter how much you want to.

Never mention your competition by name, in the worst case, people whol don't agree with you will check them out 🫠

It's not just about trolling, it's about cold hard cash too. Since Elmo started sharing ad revenue with those getting super high reach, the hate rhetoric has gone through the roof. Every quote criticism is more impressions and more cash. It's got outrageous beyond satire now.

Reminds me of that early mission from new Vegas, Cold, Cold Heart. Upon finding that the town of Nipton has been massacred, a Legion soldier asks you to spread word of what has happened here, particularly to any NCR soldiers, so as to sow fear and "Spread the lesson Creaser's Legion taught here."

Interesting... personally, I think they thrive off of negative reactions, it fuels their perception of left-leaning people as weak, or quick to react to negative stuff. Really weird, but not surprising.

Speaking as someone who does their fair share of trolling over the years, this is fact. Trolls love to see that reaction. Even a block is a dopamine hit. Just ignore, don't interact or react.

This is exactly my hesitation to use any of the blocklists I've seen so far. While they appear to be above board, I have little insight into who curated it or the reasons each account made it on the list. Moderation notes per entry would go a long way to adding credibility for me.

I’m not terribly thrilled with the blocklists I’m on so I’m reluctant to use them because the criteria for getting put on them is so vague. The creators block you too so you don’t get to ask them about it.

I agree. The issue with block lists is that it’s impossible to know if everyone on the list has been appropriately vetted or if it’s false flagging. Blocking on site has the same effect. Also what you want to block may even be different than what others may want to block.

Agreed just ignore. I'm against blocking, I've only ever blocked advertisers (and some who'd show up in my feed unwanted on a site where muting isn't a tool). Why? Everyone should have the ability to hear what I have to say in public. Mute if you can, ignore if you can't. Block if you have to.
