THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WHEN YOU SLAM A ROCKET INTO THE MOON New images just dropped from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, showing the crater formed by a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage when it hit the Moon on 5 August 2026. The new crater is 18 m across and 3 m deep.

This and other images of the impact site were acquired by LRO on 11 August 2026 from a variety of look orientations and directions. The V-shaped ejecta deposit is consistent with an impactor striking the lunar surface at about 30° from horizontal. Read more: lroc.im-ldi.com/images/1499

Please forgive me. I trust your account, but there’s so much fake AI stuff out there……it’s hard to tell sometimes. I do enjoy your posts. Thank you

I'd say "make them go pick it up" except that (a) they'll never have that capability and (b) if they did they'd use it to make an even bigger mess. So let's drop an equivalent object on SpaceX HQ instead.

The Moon has a growing # of small human made craters. Besides at least 20 probes that were designed as impactors, or orbiters which were de orbited, Apollo Saturn V third stages were deliberately crashed into the Moon 4 times. Some day these will be interesting places to examine and collect scraps.

This raises a curious question I just realized I don't know the answer too, but what's the deepest sample of lunar regolith we have? I can't imagine we have something from 3m down. Time to open like 15 wikipedia tabs! 😅
