planetary.orgThe Space Advocate Newsletter, October 2026What is “science as a service,” anyway?
Chase Million@millionconcepts.com

I don't know what science-as-a-service means, nor what NASA-funded "science" admits a sustainable "as-a-service" model. (As specifically distinct from e.g. data-as-a-service or hardware-as-a-service aka "renting.") What is the product? Who are the customers? It has never been explained.

After the town hall, I remain cautiously optimistic about NASA's "Competition Model 2.0" approach.

Chase Million@millionconcepts.com

My first pass assessment is that this is probably good. It will annoy people who have spent a lot of time and resources preparing for the pre-existing AO process. It will still require some assessment of engineering approach on spec. But the current paths are indeed both expensive and slow.

My biggest concerns are: (1) Despite trying to reduce proposal burden through reduced Step 1 requirements, there will still be prisoner's dilemma incentives to do way more. (2) Cost and timeline estimates need to be realistic, or they will never be met. Scientists aren't why missions go over budget.

These changes are causing quite a bit of stir in the space science community, and many of us have a *lot* of questions. However, the biggest issue with NASA's missions isn't a lack of industry involvement or length of review. It's that NASA lacks the money to fly missions regularly.

Funny thought experiment: Tech monopolies have spent about $1 trillion on AI development so far. How good of a chatbot could we have built for $1 trillion by just employing smart people to answer any question people might reasonably ask and collecting all the answers in a big lookup table?

Most of the concerns are not new, but simply unresolved from when they were first raised many years ago.

NASA dropped an update on Jared's Hobby Rocket. It announces "contract actions" with one contractor. That's the substance of the update, afaict. The fission reactor "is being designed and developed" by DOE and safety and regulatory hurdles appear to largely remain. Launch target still late 2028.

Reminder that nobody wanted this mission. It wasn't on any list of priorities except Jared's. And nobody wanted or asked for Skyfall, which has no point, won't do meaningful science, doesn't derisk any critical technology, and might kneecap the Mars Exploration Program by raiding its budget.

I have been working on visualizing the appearance of proposed space mirrors on the night skies. As the beam approaches it appears as a column of light emerging from the darkness. At the beam center of a 600 km high 54 m. mirror the reflection gives a light similar to that of 38 Full Moons, 9.5 Lux.

This is incredibly well written, informative, and important. Most civil servants (who remain) are working their asses off, trying to hold the institution together. But they are also often prevented from say true (even obvious) things in public. Those of us with the freedom to do so must speak.

I see a lot of calls to "nationalize SpaceX." I think this would be a mistake. First, they have no unique tech that can't be built independently. Second, monopoly is their goal. If SpaceX is nationalized, that achieves their goal. It is not the only path they're trying, but it is an acceptable one.

Elon Musk has said he will give every child in America a stake in SpaceX, his $2 trillion aerospace and artificial intelligence company, as tech firms face intensifying scrutiny over their impact on society. https://cnn.it/4yWTjTJ

No "space" part of SpaceX exists without substantial inputs of both money and innovation (via tech transfer and expertise) of the national space program that we already have. The one that has actually explored Mars, and successfully built multiple heavy lift rockets that work. NASA.

Starlink is a terrible business. It only appears "cashflow" "profitable" by hiding capex in other buckets and ignoring R&D. It has very little moat and fundamental design flaws, including always working worse in places with the most customers. But it was never intended to be "a good business."

Chase Million@millionconcepts.com

I agree that if the objective was to build a telecommunications business, then the design of Starlink makes very little sense. But that was not the objective. www.techpolicy.press/in-the-twent...
