On this Breakaway day, our thoughts are with Commander John Koenig's teams on Moonbase Alpha. Today marks 27 years since the Moon left Earth's orbit, taking with it the last of the Eagles that hadn't yet explodedโ€ฆ It was Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Space: 1999 (1975-1977).

I saw some people at the Small Space convention who had 3D printed studio-scale Eagles. I watched, slack-jawed as I realised that I too could print out one of these leviathans! Each engine pod would have to be printed in 8 sections on my Prusa Mini - BUT IT WAS POSSIBLE!!!!! (Maniacal laughter).

Thanks for posting this. I bought the Starcruiser 1 model maaaaaany years ago. I looked online and found another! much more expensive this time, but it had to be done. Cheers

The Eagle design is still the most interesting and โ€œachievableโ€ of the spacecraft of my youth. I had a lot of problems with the science of the show, especially the leaving orbit without not breaking apart or killing everyone on the moon. Never mind what would happen to the people on Earth.

This reminds me of something. In 1975, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain appeared on a syndicated talk show to promote the series. Possibly the Mike Douglas Show. The other guest was George Carlin. The host asked Carlin if he were to appear on Space: 1999, what character would he play?

Carlin said he'd be the guy who repaired the spaceships. Without having seen the show (because it hadn't aired yet) he immediately went into character as a working class garage mechanic who repaired spaceships on the Moon. I always thought of that bit while watching the show.
