The "AI allows indies to compete with AAA" argument reminds me of the 1993/94 "if your game doesn't look like DOOM don't bother" or the 1999 "no 3d engine? no market". The difference is that today almost nobody cares about indie games looking like AAA, like I literally don't see the point.

Indeed, indie gets its value and charm from NOT looking like AAA. It's SUPPOSED to cut against the grain to create something new. I'm currently disappointed with the state of the top down shooter franchise, but I'm not just gonna repeat the exact same shit the AAA companies >>>

have been doing to annoy me. No, I'm taking the time to learn the quirks and see where a genre once held in high regard could rebound and stop being associated with shovelware. Likely I'm gonna end up making something that handles comparably to boomer shooters like DOOM

I've just made it my policy that anyone who claims indies need to use ai requires percussive maintenance. Indies do NOT need to catch up with AAA, in fact, AAA has only CONTINUED to lag behind, partially as a result of, guess what, GENERATIVE FUCKING AI!

If you're lazy, just fucking say you're lazy. There's thousands of us globally who would've jumped at the chance to work on the project, hell, I'm currently on a whole bender for OG computer games right now!

"I wouldn't have any passion for this art form if I didn't have a plagiarism machine that could do most of the work for me (and then underpay people who fix the problems it creates)" Buddy wants easy money no matter who it harms

I've seen some amazing real pixel artists on social, who'd be great at it. Haven't seen your work sorry but I'm sure you'd be much better than artificial idiocy art

Seems they are passionate about making money from retro community without spending any money in the retro community. There's no way they needed AI in the final product even if they enjoy 'experimenting' with it

Reading articles like this, I feel the battle is lost. It says there were two camps of people the writer spoke to, neither against using AI. It's disappointing to keep seeing that studios need to be 'scared', too. As if AI and manually crafted games already have the same value to some people.

I'm sorry but I call bullsh!t. This world is full of talented people that get absolutely nowhere because they haven't made a name for themselves & give up on their dreams. And yet there are those who can trade on past glories and get a free pass using "AI" that got its "skill" from stolen material.

And depending on the model, my own work's a part of that training material. FUCK YOU LAION 5B! (I wish I could have easy access to verify if my works were used as training material again...)

I was at this talk too What got me was their amazing "we would knock a game out in a month" insane work ethic I'd rather play a new Dizzy game on original hardware, knocked out in a month. Hell have 2 months to be kind Bet you could get an artist for free on the box art too Day 1 purchase here

yup complete agreement. i'd have shilled it hard as a fanboy on my tiny youtube channel as i am sure many others probably would have done too and it would have been cheap marketing.

They did come off crazy passionate, absolutely fire in them when they hit a stride about ideas and implication (like the line about reverse engineering a NES). What I noticed though - their whole ai back and forth was practiced. Go back on the coverage on TE comments - not quite verbatim, but ready
