A negative review my 90% positive game just got What I read: "Yes it's fun, but since this is priced accordingly and I don't want indie devs to be sustainable, I would not recommend this game." Please indie devs, don't fall for this. Set the right price. Don't be part of the race to the bottom.

People will gladly pay 10$ for a coffee they will down in 10min so I think it's a fair price too, but the reality is a lot of indie games don't get played because they "seem too pricey" so it's a double edged blade

I dunno if that's how you call it - but I'll play devil's advocate: My country's currency is much weaker than the dollar, around 3-4x weaker. the salaries are similarly weaker, so without adjusting the price regionally, buying a 15 dollar game can feels like spending 40 dollars to a US citizen (1/2)

If they live in the us, yeah, 15 bucks for a Steam game is low, I dunno amything about your game, but I imagine it's obviously not as simple as pong so 15 bucks is reasonable for the US hah (2/2)

The only reason to give someone a negative review is if you believe the world would be a better place if they weren't doing that job. I dont care if they're an Uber driver or a game dev. (this begins to fall apart at larger organizations, but for small game devs, it absolutely applies)

Bang for buck is an important metric for people with limited funds. If they can only afford one experience, they want to make sure they get their money's worth. Would you rather a tasty meal that wasn't particularly filling, or a tasty meal that gave you leftovers for the same price?

I dunno man I tolerate y’all pretty well. So maybe you can extend that same courtesy to people who ARE concerned with getting value for their money? Or, like others in this thread, you can call us broke. That’ll work too.

Steak is one meal and meat loaf is another. would you eat a steak and say “delicious, but I should have had more of it for the same price”? With exceptions(!), if the “food” is similar quality, then the cost of the food is more when you have “leftovers”.

Depends on the goal of the restaurant. Are the margins high so that even a couple of steaks sold keeps the lights on, or are the margins low so that word of mouth spreads quickly about how good of a deal the steak is and more people come to your restaurant, making money on the volume of sales?

You are speaking as if there isn't a huge spectrum of how good, how big a portion and how expensive JUST A STEAK can be. You can find examples all over the place. Some steaks are overpriced, some are a bargain... the only way to know is trying or hearing from someone you trust who has tried.

They are people for whom time is something to be filled and spent and passed. Their life experience and expectations are so completely alien from those of people who do not have enough time to in their lives to do the things they enjoy.

"Priced accordingly" is such a subjective matter though, you have the absolute right to charge whatever you want for your product but if someone would not recommend it because of that price point then that is also okay, no?

Yeah, I see your point, but I'm answering to a post that says that they can't see "in a million years" why it costs this much. "Priced accordingly" could be understood many different ways, I was talking about the amount of work put into it and the value people get. But it's subjective of course.

It’s the dev themselves! Completely agree that that review is framed sensationally, even for a “value-maximiser”. Also, less than 10% of your reviews mention the price and out of those that were in some way critical of the price, 70+% were positive overall anyways so don’t get hung up on one voice.

Appreciating art of any kind is subjective; it gets more complicated when money is brought into the discussion. Very little is 'worth' what it costs IMO, but I also recognise that that's a me thing and not necessarily other people's values. Helps to remember that 'opinions are like assholes' adage.

i think it should be stressed that the only reason you are correct is because your game otherwise has 90% positive reviews. because every dollar *does* need to be justified by the product.

My bestie and I just talked about this! I buy games. I buy books. Do i play or read them all? lol Even if I don't enjoy something, I have a hard time leaving bad reviews (offensive or harmful I will.) Artists deserve compensation. If you don't think the art is worth it, don't buy or consume it.

The only time you'll ever catch me complaining about price is with triple A studios releasing an unfinished product and then packing the DLC with the rest of the game. If they think they can make eighty bucks the new price point for new games they've lost their minds...while people will still pay 😅

Exactly!!! I preorder indie games and ignore the AAA until months later now. DA3, I had to buy DLC to finish that story. I didn't buy Veilguard because of it. And I LOVED the DA universe, even 2. I didn't buy ME Amdromeda either. I said farewell to EA for killing Maxis and Bioware.

100% that which came to mind.. fecking had to by a dlc for me3 to get anything interesting, then they f'ed the ending and rebundled it stripping out the multiplayer and people still bought the 'upgraded' package 🤦 DA no better, didnt buy veilguard and andromedia I returned using the guarntee 2 buggy

or releasing an 'updated' skin , bundling the series, stripping the multiplayer and calling it premium and selling for 80 plus! ea/mass effect is one that comes to mind.. as if they didnt destroy it with the crap dlcs for a working story+'gear' in loot boxes...

Feel very much the same here. Used to buy things on sale a lot as a kid, but now, if something's indie, buying it marked down just doesn't feel right. Like, all those years of hard work is just worth a few bucks?

15 dollars is nothing for a game nowadays. And I for once would never think twice before supporting a game I like in that price category. And if you can't afford it, that's alright ofc. But don't blame that on such an affordable game. Save up and one day you can.

its probably because a lot of popular super-content filled indie games have a veryyyy low price like 20-30 dollars (pizza tower, silksong, etc.) people who only play like popular indie games expect 20-30 dollars for like 20 hours of content now not the creator of those games fault but yknow

Considering the price of a cinema visit nowadays I don't see the issue of a game costing 15 bucks. I understand why some Devs set their games for cheap but at the same time I fear how it affects the expectations of others. I saw too many "Hollow Knight costs 20. Why can't this game?" arguments.

Yeah, dude! I know an indie dev can't waste 10 hours of game time on cinematic CGI cut scenes, like FF Remake, but at least give me 20 hours of walking between my small bursts of combat and story!

Lol! Yep I'll just take another year or two to make it longer! It's an hour or more point and click funny game that people enjoyed the one evening laugh-a-thon. I think it was £7.99 at the time of that review, which also allowed plenty of room for gradual discounts when on sale.

Clearly the solution here is to trap them with an achievement that takes 6,000+ hours to unlock like TerraTech Legion. Let's see them complain about "substance" then! (Before anyone comes for me, yes, I am joking.)

I've said it once and I'll say it again! The AAA industry's practices of dev burnout into games that are essentially money furnaces have irreversibly ruined the normie gamer's mindset towards games' true worth. And that makes me sad

The same people who think indie games need to “have more stuff” think that all games should be content. Imagine watching a short film and yelling at the director to pad it out.

Literally one of the comments I got was about how a 30 minute video essay is free. Brother, ABC gum is free, I’m still not chewing it. I’ll buy a stick myself.

I always say that user-based reviews mean absolutely nothing. It's because of people like the person shown in this screenshot that I have formed this opinion. The only reviews that matter to me are those by actual critics or my own opinions. That being said, I'm now interested in your game :)

15 is a steal. WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, AN IGN REVIEWER? Oh wait, that makes sense. Because I bet you they didnt finish the game. *insert wheeze emoji*

All the people arguing about content and length of a game for the price don't seem to realize that you're paying for the effort that goes into making an entire game, not the product of that effort. If you want devs to be able to make games, you have to pay them to be able to make them.

I for one have never complained when I see an indie game priced at 20$-40$ instead of the usual 5$-10$. Sadly I'm also a cheapass who only ever buys games on sale. Gamers need to get over the indie stigma and remember devs have bills to pay to make the damn game.

I chose to pass the difference from platforms to players, so I get roughly the same on both, and it makes the game cheaper for you on itch 😅

Very true. Charge what you'd like but regional pricing helps people in different countries with lesser buying power also access your games. (I think Steam has a default setting to enable it)
