You can never just learn Linux. Mfs keep changing and messing with things on all levels. The things that you learnt how to do last year? Sorry it's deprecated.

I used to get hardware accelerated video decoding on one version of chrome(ium) working few months back. Now I don't. Searched all forums, Reddit, documentation. Still at loss. I hope someone can help me..🥹

The longer something has stayed relevant. The longer it will stay relevant in the future as well. A loose principle which I think works pretty well whether it is morals, spirituality, values, wisdom, books, cinema, productivity tips or any computer program.

Im sure many of my more knowledgable friends may disagree but... we have a saying among teachers. In primary school we teach the kids, in high school we teach the subject matter, and I feel like a lot of tech is like that. I wanna USE the tech, not have to keep re-learning and assembling it

Better that then Microsoft's infuriating habit of moving settings to a new place and refusing to document that they've changed 😂

Slackware helps. It still changes, but at a much slower pace, and ideas Volkerding deems bad don't even make it in. Slackware stable releases are supported for nine years, during which time they only receive updates for bugfixes and security vulnerability patches.

This is why tools such as Webmin are such a godsend. You can just use the front-end without having to worry about the internals. Most of the changes are done for good reason even if it often doesn't feel like it. Certainly beats dragging old standards behind you forever more, holding you back.

Learning Linux isn't about memorizing commands as much as it's about learning *how* to learn new concepts and software. Plus, the ubiquitous stuff (tar, for example) isn't going anywhere, so straight-up memorization isn't invalid.

Have been trying to actually install it(ubuntu 24.04 LTs) on my Dell latitude 3490, and it's keeps saying installing and then it eventually booted into windows and I was like wtf 😑

It becomes very freeing when you realize that all software usage and development basically falls down to “the deprecated way” and “the way not yet ready for production.” I know folks still using RHEL 7.

I started to learn how to create android apps a while back. I got a basic project working, but when I came back to it the dev environment just gave me a ream of deprecation warnings and it would no longer compile, having changed nothing at all. I just gave up trying to fix it in the end.
