That Apple commercial where the song says "I'm genius" sounds like "I'm jealous" in the one where the Mom didn't get her husband anything for his B-day and she's jealous of the daughters getting him gifts so she uses AI to create a photo collage. So sad.

More than AI being the problem I believe this is a corporate culture problem Long emails to pretend hard work, because if the company thinks you aren’t giving 100 then you are ripping them off so that’s how you get this nonsense

My new department head (IT department for a school system) stated in his introductory meeting that he knows just enough about computers/networks to be dangerous. He also proudly bragged that he writes everything with ChatGPT. I just make sure I get my pay twice a month.

When I was in college, that was called cheating. Why strain your brain when Hal can write papers for you. You can get your degree without actually learning your subject. Gives you more time for Cheetos, Mountain Dew, and computer games

I think this cartoon points out what I’ve been worried about for a while. Generative AI has become a sort of ‘tax’ on our economy. Everyone must pay in or lose out, but the net benefit is still far less than the cost.

Computers have sped scientific knowledge exponentially. Imaging scans, even of the living human brain, are only possible because of computers. The human brain is a vast frontier we've only begun to explore. By the time we figure it out, computers will have already taken over.

It's kind of a false symmetry though. Only the person on the left, the email writer, is doing anything bad. They're communicating a low-information message with unnecessary verbosity. The person on the right is just using tools to cope with unnecessary verbosity

But what if the person on the left actually wrote a real email? The person on the right wouldn't know, and a lot of people will summarize using AI anyway because they assume you will use it. It's like the prisoner's dilemma in a way.

The person on the right has voluntarily given up their ability to know whether the email is human-written or AI-written (if they could even tell, which it's fairly likely they couldn't). For them, the benefit of the summarization tool outweighs the risk of losing nuance. What's the dilemma?

I have an old-style answering machine on my landline to screen calls. ~90% of the time, there's no message, or a recording. As there are lots of robodialers, it may be that most of the time my phone is in use, a computer has called my computer and they decide not to talk to each other.

Let's make... language arts and business writing courses great again?! Come on folk. There's no easy path to this human experience. Star trek isn't reality, we won't make that kind of reality, Especially, if we're constantly looking for easy way out of hard brain work.
