the general bsky userbase being a lil dismissive of the standard.site integration is a reminder that this whole atproto atmosphere ecosystem is a long game. not everyone will be on board, and that's ok! we'll be ready to welcome people into a decentralized social future as big social fades away :)

It’s a shared format for blog discovery and subscription, so that wherever you post your blog, whether it be on your own website or with WordPress or leaflet or offprint or pckt or anything else, you can have the same distribution on this common social layer.

it feels like these things only ever cater to techbro types, and they’re the only ones getting excited about them if only techbros care about something, that’s a red flag to the average user. people who are too deep in techbro circles do not know what normal people are like, or what they want

ime atproto developers are the least tech bro coded people i’ve met in the space, all of them socially aware about the impacts of social media and are enthusiastic for bringing back an era of the internet where users are interconnected eg geocities/rss instead of siloed in platforms ljke today

there is a messaging problem, but i think people would want to own their own data, where users have control as to what platforms they allow, and people can be connected without platforms, no matter where they are online, all with one account, and i want that digital future for everyone

“i think people would want to own their own data” false equivalence that hurts ppl’s trust in atproto yes ppl like to be able to avoid choosing platforms they don’t like, but “owning your data” is vague/buzzwordy & ppl don’t care. it’s like email providers—everyone will just flock to 3 central ones

Reminded me that most of my feed is ATProto devs since my entire feed was full of cheering on the integration Sometimes I forget that we're really all still in a beta of ATProto's true reach/power

There's a narrative and communication strategy that would have made this land really well in the public. Focusing on what this means for creators, artists, and journalists rather than info consumers. Talking about the why instead of the how. Focusing on implications rather than features.

this too! if users want more people in this community instead of twitter, we have to be ok with features that matter to some but won't negatively affect everyone else

people will always find something to be pessimistic about. thankfully i haven’t seen too much of this personally otherwise big sad

Gonna be honest, Im not dismissive, but I dont totally get it. The announcement makes it look like auto generated og cards but I already have og cards. The website talks about lexicons leaving someone out of the know completely lost. I think there’s a better marketing opportunity to sell the benefit

For sure. Communications need to be targeted to readers and writers, not just devs. The new enhanced card helps people discover your whole blog whenever you publish a new blog post. It works with a shared language for defining publications that can work with any website or blog.

This post right here, I think does a better job explaining the value than most I’ve seen.

I went and set up some swanky @standard.site stuff with Vale.Rocks' long-form posts today. Just look at that rich embed! I see it has been picked up by @sifa.id and shows my posts on my profile there. That's the power of the AT Protocol right there, folks! vale.rocks/posts/the-im...

However, even as a dev (only tangentially aware of some ATProto capabilities), I find the docs confusing and lacking. I’ll give a couple examples (not to be dismissive, but rather highlight some areas for opportunities that could help myself and others).

It's ok if it happens slowly. I do believe/hope that atproto (because of things like the single account, single "source of truth" of your own data, interop etc) makes it an incredibly sticky ecosystem. Once you go atproto, you don't want to go back to the silo!

If a person cares a lot about their data, indeed, it is hard to go back into the silo But if they don't care much about being siloed as they were over the last couple of years, having bad PR and relationship with them will definitely create an exodus from here and close the atproto door for them

I speak from the Brazilian POV I see this happen every month, people ARE leaving (some are going to Mastodon, some going back to X, but some are just vanishing from having an online presence at all), and people and instances are closing their bridges over Fedi too
