Here’s one thing I really like in my reader app: Rather than being an inbox, I’ve gone with a timeline approach. However, if you’re subscribed to multiple feeds that could mean seeing the same article multiple times. Rather I’ll favor feeds matching urls and show where else the article appeared

George Rodier@georgerodier.com

I’ve always been frustrated with every reader app that I’ve used for one reason or another. So using one that I’ve built to address some many of the tiny nitpicks I’ve had has really changed how I interact with the web in a much more enjoyable way.

There’s a little more logic to it than that (based on timing when articles appear, custom filtered feeds, etc). Also still a WIP because I need to handle situations where it could be in more than one additional feed. But happy with it thus far.

It turned out soooo good!

I’ve been slowly making a pork broth for a ramen. And my house now smells amazing. And now I’m beyond excited to dive into it (despite having a couple more hours to go.

“why wouldn’t the internet archive be using the latest php” probably the same reason my sonos speakers are like a decade old, they get the job done and would expensive and laborious to update and i am not a billion dollar company

I’ve always liked the idea of building a reader app as a good project because it will force you to learn a ton about the web and a is more involved than a basic CRUD app. But holy hell, the amount of tiny decisions and edges cases to consider to build a performant app with good ux is mind blowing!

Yes, I am designing it so others may be able to use it one day (still deciding if I want to or not). However, every day I’m finding new edgecases and opportunities for quality of life improvements. I have a very large list of things I deem required for it be in the state I consider acceptable

But it has been a very fun project thus far, so I’ll be excited to share more when the time comes – even if that more is “look what I’ve built for myself, here’s how I did it, and all the challenges and decisions I made along the way”

Abstractions and architecture make code easy to extend and modify. DRY is about domain logic, not lines of code. Agents and humans benefit from code that is designed to be extended and modified and is implemented in as few places as possible.

I built a fun little Chrome extension that lets plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. To access them again, you have to slash through the vines 🪚🌿

I’m a vim user but whenever I see lists like this, I’m reminded how little of it you NEED, but at the same time, how many more commands I want to try to incorporate into my flow

Learning Vim. Again.

I’m torn on this. I think it’s right to call out that soft navigations load much faster and are more reflective of what user will experience. BUT… This shouldn’t be a call to go all in on SPA’s. That initial page load is so poor and there is no reason every page load can’t be as fast as the soft.

Ben Schwarz@benschwarz.bsky.social

The pitch for single page apps was always “it’s faster after the first load”. Google’s Core Web Vitals, used in search ranking, now measure soft navigations. It’s true: LCP drops by about a third. But, I don't think SPAs are ever really worth all the compromises and extra code.

I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that it’s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity it’s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked

I came across other examples like this in their docs last week and had to stop reading them. Explain compaction, context window size not equaling addressable memory, etc instead of the “look at our little human” bs. It’s such a misrepresentation to the masses & a disservice to curious individuals.

Amyville Hoyrror@amyhoy.bsky.social

this would be fine and normal if they say "it's bc sometimes humans have to read those logs" or "the things you say to the chatbot change the things it says back to you, and this could create a negative spiral for the user" but no, of course not. they pretend they invented a digital slave. freaks

Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 are the first models that have really clicked with me and how I would use them to produce code (which I would describe as very human in the loop). Not coincidentally, it’s also the first time I think better models may also have diminishing returns for the way I use them.

At the same time, software is changing, and it can change for the better. It’s really up to us. If we can now do even more with less, we should aim higher.

If you'd like to contribute to an oss project, don't focus on creating PRs. Help the maintainers triage issues and review existing PRs. Test beta releases, and give feedback about new APIs and features. Join the community and be around to help others. They need your care way more than your code now.

I’m taking 10 days off work for first time since I returned from paternity 9 months ago. Drove down to my parents in SC south of Myrtle Beach. Today I played a round of golf with my Dad. Tonight, we’re taking the kids to a Halloween festival. Life is good!

This past week I’ve been working night and weekends to help support a project at work after the kids have gone to bed. And I gotta say, while I couldn’t do this all the time, I don’t hate occasionally working extra when I know my effort is going towards making things better.

Not even kidding about New Jersey being my favorite genre of music. Add Eastern PA into the mix and so much of the music I listen to happens to be from this area: Bruce Springsteen, Gaslight Anthem, Titus Andronicus, Dave Hause, Menzingers, Bouncing Souls, etc

The trick is not for the ai robot to clean the laundry/dishes but to actually put them away neatly after they are clean

literally all I want is laundry and dishes handled

Here is my fully documented HTML boilerplate. It is a lean, minimal and solid foundation I use across the sites I develop. Written mostly for me, because I'm sure to forget why I've done things the way I have, but I hope it is of use to you too. vale.rocks/posts/html-b... #HTML #WebDev

vale.rocksMy HTML BoilerplateA document outlining and explaining my general structure for HTML pages to use. A slim general markup template that applies to almost all HTML documents on the web and forgoes anything unnecessary. It is a general framework to build upon for individual sites.

So often I get pulled away from actual implementation to do architecture, software design, requirement solutioning, code review, etc. So it’s always good when I can step away and do something at home for myself, because (and it’s always a good reminder)… Coding is fun!

It’s been far too long, but pizza night tonight was an incredible success! Started with a summer pie with a roasted garlic cream sauce, bacon, jalapeños, and corn. Finished with a classic - homemade red sauce, pepperoni, basil, and hot honey. All with a simple yet delicious homemade dough!

dame@dame.is

should i change my avatar to a photo of me during this season where i am networking and looking for my next job? is that gonna be more beneficial to my efforts and make me more approachable online?
