my husband sent me an Instagram reel and was like….is this AI? and upon searching: it is a plague of AI fake Natives across TikTok and IG selling various “handcrafted” items. moccasins. earrings. jackets. they all have the same AI website and all the stuff costs $79.99

Yeah that’s AI. These are getting worryingly good. Besides the backgrounds looking weirdly blurry, you can also see that the pickup truck in the background of a couple shots is a weird nonsense mashup of ‘70s Ford and Chevy trucks

We really need to give people more time and resources to engage in their own creative works, because doing creative work trains your brain to really pay attention to the world around you, to see what's really there. For example: without hitting play, is that truck right or left-hand drive?

I look for goods on Native websites sometimes, haven't gone through with it bc I can't afford it. Items like shoes or jackets would be 300, not 80. The people who would be taken in by scams like this have not been looking where they actually sell goods bc otherwise they would go "80? 🧐"

unlike other demographics Native people actually have a law that makes it illegal to say something is Indigenous made if you aren’t federally enrolled (The Native American Arts and Crafts Act)

It's based on tribal affiliation not ancestry claims, so that wouldn't work unless they really are 1/32 Cherokee and are enrolled. You either have to be a citizen of that tribe or be officially recognized by that tribe as an artisan

Words can’t describe how much I would love (LOVE!) to see these folks pushed beyond bankruptcy by a lawsuit invoking that law. Yeah, I know that’s damn near impossible…but I need to self-soothe with this dream because this ish just raised my blood pressure (not even kidding).

i think there is one group doing a lot of them because they recycle the same formula over and over again, same music, same video concept, just a different AI person and a different item

i sent my parents one of these and asked if they would know that it was AI, and they both said no i wonder how much money these scammers are making. there’s dozens of accounts.

I was posting about the berry bowls and the autism blankets about a month or so back. There’s so many drop shippers making AI videos of Sad Goth/Sad Autistic/Sad Girl with Vitiligo and preying on people’s good sides. It makes me mad.

And it’s all the same set of patterns: - AI video showing how it was handmade (but faked) - plea to let them know if their art is any good - loved one pleading on their behalf - derisive mean person at a farmers market, often throwing it to the ground

They think empathy is dysgenic weakness, so of course they attack it however they can. If they scam you, that harms you and this is good to them. If you decide callousness is the only defense, they win too because then you are less likely to object to their cruelty to others.

Ive seen a ton for dnd nerds, some saying "Help this black women sell her bags!" and various other ones trying to claim a minority owned business. Its not only fake, its actively harming real people trying to sell real items they make because too many people just dont know whats real anymore.

The repeated price and storefront template are more useful than the images alone. Platforms can follow those shared patterns through payment accounts and fulfillment instead of asking buyers to spot every fake.

There’s a whole series of AI scams like this that focus on various communities including young people with Down’s Syndrome, LGBTQ people, and the elderly (usually presented by their adult son or daughter).
