But what happens if I don't use up the money on the card? → It's easy to refund the balance. Tourist cards (airport only, no deposit) are only good for 28 days, but normal cards are good for 10 years. Also you can use it at any convenience store and most shops that take credit cards.

Bonus advice: refuse any 2000y notes money changers give you! Especially Americans may like them as they feel like 20USD bills, but they are rare and many Japanese people have never seen them, so you may be unable to spend them. There is no stigma against large bills in Japan.

Can't I just buy tickets as needed? → Ticket prices are in 10y increments based on distance. Can you read this map (no English!) and calculate your ticket price? How long will that take you while everyone else just walked through the gate and tapped? Also good luck with transfers!

Can't I use my credit card / phone? → Only a very limited set of central stations support this, and it requires more complicated setup.

Common objections: But I'm only here a week! → It's a payment system, not a subscription. It requires no personal info and a 500y (~3USD) deposit that's easy to refund. But I have a JR pass / other special ticket! → Riding only JR trains, or only trains on any particular ticket isn't feasible.

これは王子に見つけたまた別の変異種で、特定の名前がないようです。ドクダミの白い部分は植物学的に花弁ではなく葉らしいので、この変異種でその正体が現れています。
