don't worry, I'm sure all of it will be worth sacrificing for Great British AI

Glen O'Hara@gsoh31.bsky.social

Britain's universities are now in chaos. Direct government investment is just 11% of income, and the vast majority of tuition is paid for by the students in loans. A £50bn industry in a devastating tailspin. unison.org.uk/magazine/fea...

Semi-regular reminder that "metascience" is governmentalising bullshit masquerading as research.

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

'The UK Metascience Unit is funding a cohort of research projects, each focused on how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to measure different aspects of research quality, including originality, rigour, and societal impact. This document explains the rationale behind these investments.'

I'm looking for a strong PhD student candidate for applying to EPSRC DLA (Doctoral Landscape Award) studentships (starting Oct 2027) topic: studying software developers' practices with "AI tools" (i.e. LLM-based assistance) and mapping out its implications stuartreeves.mataroa.blog/blog/phd-adv...

there needs to be a wide-ranging investigation into the role of highly-paid consultants siphoning off vast quantities of cash from UK universities, and their role as silent partners in the radical reshaping of UK institutions that is taking place right now

HE consultants in the UK act as a parasitic force that rolls out the same template 'plan' for restructuring universities, regardless of the success of that plan at other institutions, and against any and all evidence of their own apparent past failures

research - particularly in my biased view ethnomethodological / conversation analytic work that explicates tech-in-interaction - has extensively and exhaustively shown time and time again that the mundane 'clerking' that technology requires regardless of claims is a fundamental feature of its use

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

i see arguments like this sometimes and ... what's the thing. what is this "everyday annoying task" that an AI could actually do and that you could trust it to not totally fuck up? i cannot imagine the things. and tech/robots have made a lot of tasks more efficient but there's always more shit

We gear up for major strike action, with picket lines on Thursday while council deliberates on c.600 job losses, 48 course closures, 1:22 staff-student ratios, all for a 9% surplus. @uonucu.bsky.social put forward a comprehensive alternative financial plan to save jobs, education & research.

one reason I dislike researchers using the concept "human-in-the-loop" is that it is actually impossible (and analytically foolhardy) to disentangle people, their interlocking lifeworlds, and the vast set of technical and other fabrics that compose them (h/t to @wendynorris.bsky.social)

404 Media@404media.co

OpenAI has thousands and thousands of contractors helping improve the company's AI models. Multiple contractors have been fired for using AI to train the AI. www.404media.co/people-train...

might be a good time to, you know, perhaps actually pay attention to the last 100 odd years of philosophy of language, and the praxeological turn in linguistics? h/t @drkatedevlin.bsky.social

Science Magazine@science.org

Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study. The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA

it is always remarkable to me how routinely virtuosic people can be at doing language and then simultaneously act like completely ignorant chumps about it as soon as they start engaging in practices of "science" and "research"

so-called "AI" company leaders have been busy grooming politicians to treat their technologies as having "agency" as a method of absolving themselves of any responsibility, whether it's to steal data, lack cyber security competence, or accelerate climate destruction www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cv...

bbc.co.ukAustralia launches urgent review after OpenAI program hacks government health portalExperts believe it's the world's first known AI breach of a government system.

"[Marles] says it is clear there has been 'unintended' access by the OpenAI model, which 'definitely does raise questions about whether the law has been broken'" software doesn't have intentions, but the people running it do clearly the grooming process has been working, congrats OpenAI

(*technically it is possible to ascribe intentions to anything, but the senses in which these ascriptions are meant, and the work they do, are radically different and have various locally relevant properties)

the Moore's Law of funding is "AI use is inevitable"

Des Fitzgerald@desfitzgerald.bsky.social

It's banal but the use of "inevitable" by the "research on research institute" is a performative of course It becomes inevitable because people close to centre of power keep saying it's inevitable.

this move to structure gov - dividing universities between DfE and BIST (was DSIT) - was incredibly stupid, indicative of muddled thinking and deep cluelessness about how research and teaching intertwine* * at least, that is how UKHE has been set up historically, rightly or wrongly

Hetan Shah@hetanshah.bsky.social

He seemed keenly aware of the pressure on university finances and how this was impacting research - he raised it proactively before we did. This gives me some hope of trying to join up policy between DfE and BIST around this agenda

I find the affectation of stating that one is a "troublemaker" incredibly annoying I'm guessing some of this comes from the popularisation of (certain flavours of) the concept of "trouble" from various theorists (e.g., Butler) hey, look at me, what a troublemaker I am

I've found where all the GPUs have gone

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Holy shit. Bloomberg just verified one of my biggest scoops - that Microsoft only has 2gw of operational capacity. I had it at 1.993GW in prep for the story that @aishadown.bsky.social and I did for the guardian. Vindication! www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

maybe it is time to retire(?) the term "human-in-the-loop" it is often used as an apology, or an excuse, or a fix for technology - now hijacked by bad actors too it is underpinned by a conceptual poverty that imports, unannounced, some kind of cybernetics-lite way of thinking

unfortunately this is happening all over the sector because of university management culture that thrives on copying the de rigueur rather than listening to staff, HE consultants are siphoning off huge amounts of cash from university budgets to construct plans to sack staff

Alex Prichard@profalexp.bsky.social

It also became clear that Uni exec were leaning on the advice of a consultancy firm that has been shaping HE policy in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK: Nous (or Nousferatu, as they’re now known). The fact VCs and others are delegating policy to consultants, despite £400k salaries, is disgusting

UK universities slowly being strangled to death by going on decade+ of terrible mismanagement and no one is doing anything about it or seems to care - the current settlement is not fit for purpose and cannot continue (it will tho! until the very last wheeze)

Robin Bisson@robinbisson.bsky.social

Great day for next year's university students today, but maybe less good for universities? Latest Home Office stats show international student visa applications down again (and July is an important month) Their fees prop up expensive courses like engineering, which saw a 14% uptick in enrolments

"big name" universities desperately accepting anything with a pulse to already oversubscribed programmes considered to be "money makers" while simultaneously hacking away at anything expensive that sits in the "wrong" quadrant of their management matrix

the vision of the future is virtually identical to Apple's Knowledge Navigator (1987) while simultaneously being ignorant of Weiser's decentring of computing (albeit not quite "decomputing" ofc) if you want further proof that vision has entirely dried up post-smartphone look no further

why aren't they just "asking the AI"?

if you are doing human* centred research on/with technology (e.g. HCI), funding frequently becomes entangled with big tech in one way or another - this interview is a nice reminder of what we're up against (*person, social, more-than-human, etc.)
