Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study. The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA

This is a story from science.org. And yeah, that should make you feel kinda depressed—not about ai feeling pain (it can't), but about what in the name of fucking god is going on at science.org.
About 6 months ago, OpenAI and Anthropic made a bunch of "cooperative agreement" sort of things will dozens, maybe hundreds of publications, from "news" site like @theguardian.com to small blogs, to "promote" their LLMs. I wouldn't doubt they also have an agreement with these folks.
Look, I already ditched Nature.com for being A.I. pushers. Don't you fall into the trap of treating it like a legitimate thing.
Every day, at least one major publication provides evidence of Betteridge's Law @ianbetteridge.com
@cstross.bsky.social answered this question in 2010: "The sources of pain a corporate organism seeks to avoid are lawsuits, prosecution, and a drop in shareholder value." www.antipope.org/charlie/blog...
Reading the attached post, I'm sorry that it's bullshit that AI models can feel pain: bsky.app/profile/mark...
A better way to phrase this Variety headline would be "Publicity Seeker Who Invented A Program Continues Long Con"
Does Science Magazine understand science? They at least pretend they do, unless they have to promote an oligarch scam of a human masquerade for mental manipulation and control. bsky.app/profile/scie...

I have zero intention of reading it but the philosopher @stevecooke.org who did posted that "two of the authors operate out of AI thinktanks opaquely funded by philanthropic donations (i.e. tech-bros), they used chatbots to help write it," which adds further reasons to question its value.
More to the interests of certain parties, A.I.s can't form Unions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1885_Yo...
The field of "AI research" really feels like it has breathing room to fund some of the dumbest people on this Earth. bsky.app/profile/3dbe...
Can animals feel pain? Can humans? www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLPF...
If animals are as real as humans are - are other people also as real as I am? 🤯 This sounds like abstract philosophy but only because we lack empathy to imagine somebody other than ourselves being able to suffer. Pain, fear and joy are more than 400 million years old. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4Sn...
