Now this place is teeming with game devs, I should probably pin a post with my actual work. I don't post actual gamedev stuff that much, but the best place to start with is my SIGGRAPH presentation on the Tech Art of Sea of Thieves (second video at the bottom of the page) dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

Halo Jones was so formative, in so many ways. The different drummers! The rat-king as biological warfare! The dangers of AI robo-dogs!

Of all the warnings that 2000AD gave me as a child, I believe the most useful one in my personal life was the warning against guys like this. Similar to the warning given by Labyrinth. It said, little girl, you meet a guy like this? You open the valve on his pressure suit.

Went to the LFF premiere of Laika's #Wildwood and holy shit do I have all the feels. I might need to process what I just saw, and also maybe get therapy. Stunningly gorgeous, and my psyche may never recover.

Having not read the books, I am genuinely curious how readers will find it, as my impression is that the movie takes the material into a *far* darker and more emotionally intense place. We felt a bit bad for the kids in the audience at the premiere as the PG-13 rating is well-earned.

Hey there friends! Unfortunately, I was among those impacted by layoffs at Heart Machine last week. If you or someone you know is looking for an experienced Unreal Engine Technical Artist, I'm available for full time, part time, or contract opportunities.

I am part of this round of layoffs and am seeking new opportunities. If your team needs a narrative director / storyteller, please reach out.

Holy shit, Davinci Resolve is adding a photo mode! This is legitimately the #1 feature I would have asked for and I never thought BlackMagick would actually do it?!

But I'm shocked, SHOCKED that they've actually made this step. Never had any inkling that BlackMagick cared about the non-video side of things, and would actually put resources into competing with Lightroom, given they have a very different niche generally.

The Resolve Colour tab is so considerably better than Lightroom or any other RAW photo editor, to the point that I've graded all my photos in Resolve for several years now, but lack of dedicated photo support made this painful (e.g. horizontal and vertical photos on the same timeline).

Is there a term for the opposite of Redundant Acronym Syndrome (e.g. PIN number etc.) to describe where the word feels redundant but actually isn't? Any time I talk about Unreal's Material Parameter Collections and have to say 'MPC Parameter' it feels wrong in a RAS way, but is technically correct.

Today is Sex Worker's Rights Day. Sex worker rights are human rights not just because we're humans just like you, but also any rights taken from us will be taken from you too. Surveillance, police violence, debanking, censorship, we faced all of those for years before it turned on everyone else.

Every time that a game has ambitions to be the next Doom, WoW, Apex, etc. I'm always reminded of Douglas Adams talking about how he wanted to be a member of Monty Python when he was younger. Cleese, specifically, and didn't really understand that the role was already taken until he was much older.

I feel really bad for the employees who were fired and whose work will now be gone in anything except YouTube gameplay uploads. But also god, what a sadly obvious outcome. And the executives so clearly hinging everything on this being an Apex level surprise drop hit are part of the blame here

Love the classification as a "space western".

From 1990, Igor Majstrovsky’s movie poster for the first official release of 1977’s Star Wars in the USSR. Is that Darth Vader? I assume it is, and very splendidly evil he looks too.

Oh my god it wasn't even close 💚

TIL Orient Express makes yachts and lets you book voyages on them like cruises. This is going to get real weird real fast if they start doing cruises down the Nile and someone gets murdered.

More seriously though, my main puzzling follow-up has been The Darkest Files, and so far it is excellent. With games like Pentiment, KCD2 and Darkest Files I'm really starting to appreciate the granular and lived-in feel of historically-based games, wish you had more of that in fantasy games, too.

Having a hell of a good time with Seance of Blake Manor 😊 We should be so lucky as to have both Blue Prince and Blake Manor come out within the same year.

Every time there's a cabinet reshuffle, I just really want someone to make a deck builder game based on parliamentary politics where you can literally reshuffle your deck and draw a new cabinet as a mechanic.

the reason I’ve been so vocal about the water use of AI thing is that the most commonly cited stuff saying it’s bad doesn’t add up & I think it’s important to be accurate about the negative impacts of this tech. if 1/3 of your cited issues are wrong, an informed listener may doubt the remaining 2.

Quantian@quantian.bsky.social

The commonly cited AI water usage statistics are based on a methodology where, if your data center buys green energy from a hydroelectric dam (as lots do, including the hyperscalers), then “natural evaporation of the water from the lake behind the dam” is counted as that data center’s water use.

One of the scenes that made me stop watching Star Trek Discovery was in S01E02 where the protagonist, confined to the brig, enters an ethical debate with the ship's computer and convinces it to let her go. Little did I know only a few years later it would become the most realistic part of the show 😔

Joel@snufkinlib.bsky.social

Of the many writers to predict AI, only Douglas Adams got the tone right
