When you want to turn a dog into an IED processed mulch but also want Fido to cost a million dollars in taxpayer money before you send him into the building.

This is fucking weird and disgusting

I'm playing Kenshi again and its funny to me how perception of this game is this hardcore edgy game for masochists when its actually strangely forgiving. Just very counterintuitive. The hungry bandits are oddly nice for post-apocalyptic desperate stragglers. #Kenshi #gaming

And the "failure is a part of the game" means it has to be a bit more forgiving than any other rpg where losing a fight is a game over. Unless you run directly towards a beak thing nest from the start you'll probably survive most fights.

Getting your teeth kicked in is and running around aimlessly being how you properly begin a run is just a wierd gap for people ig. It's fun to watch your guy go from getting wailed on to doing the wailing tho, I'm hooked on numbers go up lol.

Like they'll knock you on your ass and take your food but that's it lol. They don't even rob you for things to sell for food they're very dumb and you can bribe them for dirt cheap to leave.

I spent a long time going "that's just a stupid stereotype, we don't even have that many sheep anymore" then as soon as somebody puts a sheep with bedroom eyes on TV the nation loses its entire mind thespinoff.co.nz/society/03-1...

thespinoff.co.nzKiwibank is desperately trying to stop people saying they want to fuck its sheep mascotBut for every lustful post killed by a legal threat, another 10 take its place.

I started reading "The Turn of the Screw", by Henry James. First chapter is just some set up and establishing the framing device. But holy run-on sentences, Batman! The first page is half covered in text and its only two sentences. TWO. I had to read the first line a few times-

-because by the time you reach the end of it you've seen five additional clauses and forgot what the start of the sentence was! #Booksky

Foolish tarnished, driven by the flame of ignorance. Someone must make it make sense, let it be Margit the sensible.

the make it make sense lady always has the expression of a dark souls character with the sadness sliders maxed out

Been a while💀 A fun read, the first half sets up some dire stakes though the second half feels like things are being hurried a little. Namely Eleanor remembering her super death ray side project at the eleventh hour and using it to fight off the aliens.

Abe@abedrawstuff.bsky.social

Now reading: The crystal planetoids by Stanton A. Coblentz www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/75478 So far so good, only through the first chapter but its set up the hook and the trio's relationship well. The description of the aliens is properly bizarre and I'm excited to see what's done with em. #Booksky

One thing I read but I can't remember where was the idea that alien invasion stories are connected to European colonialism. In a "imagine someone treated us how we treat them" sort of way. I wonder if that was intentional here, as the aliens call humans "nignigs" and plan to-

Skin them and stuff them in their natural history museums. And their whole plan is conquering earth to set up a colony on the planet. I couldn't find much about the author to really support this reading. Still, a fun read.

Still she does have more agency in the story than a lot of modern fiction even, so that's surprising. Also Gates runs around with a scouter and a silly electric wobbly sword to fight the aliens its funny.

The aliens themselves sprinkle out bits of lore that is interesting but its sometimes clunky when delivered through dialoge. Mainly because its off that the aliens would explain it to people they think are idiot vermin. The plan to bake the earth is suitably horrific in the proper goofy scifi way.

Eleanor is surprisingly busy, at first she seemed like the "oh no doctor", type of character who's there to faint and get kidnapped. But surprisingly she's the most active character in the story. Its still a story from the forties so you get silly lines like - #booksky

Her chalking up her hesitation to kill captive humans and her boyfriend to "womanly weakness" or the aliens letting her go despite refusing to help them because even among octopus people on Saturn women are fickle and emotional apparently.

Duar the Accursed, 1937, Clifford Ball. Very pulply fantasy, though the tropes are a little tired now. If Duar was written today, I'm afraid he'd be written off as a Mary Sue. He's big, tough, and the queen is immediately crushing on him despite his disrespect. #Booksky

Still, I like the parallel of Duar throwing away the stone and his life as an Elder Being to focus on something smaller in scale. The stone was worth ten kingdoms and he gave it up for one. He could have been a god, and chose to stay a man. So it does get a little clever.

Duar having a primordial ghost gf who keeps bailing him out of trouble when he says he still doesn't want to be a super special super boy is kinda cheap, and makes him seem more petulant than someone like Conan. Its a neat dynamic for a short story but as a serial Idk if it would work.

Oh yeah, uh, In the Court of the Dragon. Third story in TKIN. Short and simple and tense enough. The play isn't mentioned, instead the king in yellow just shows up after the narrator gets spooked like "It was ME, Barry!" I suppose it shows how old these stories are- #Booksky

Cus guy gets stalked by a spooky thing and wakes up realizing it was a dream (or WAS it? Dun dun dunnn) is the opening chapter/scene of like every other horror thing. Its foundational and was probably fresh at the time, but just ok now.

Finished the second story of the King In Yellow, the Pallid Mask. An interesting ending considering how the last one ended. The actual play is only mentioned once in passing and once while the MC is feverish, though it does tie into the theme of the story with the play snippet we get. #booksky

Spoiler I suppose the idea is that the tragedy of Boris' death allows Alec and Genevieve to drop their masks and come together, the interesting thing is Alec doesn't want Boris dead as you'd expect in this kind of story, he loves the guy, and he's willing to flee Paris to let them be together.

The strange thing is Boris does, as far as he knows, kill Genevieve with the mineral pool. He can't have known she'd revive? But if he did it's written like he was taking himself out of the picture in a way that let's Alec and Gen not feel at fault.

How do you introduce a character who's appeared before to a reader who missed that first issue? It seems like the best way is to hit the main character points quick and hard. By the first page you know Poirot is a pompous detective with the brains to back it up. #Booksky

Finished the first story in the King in Yellow. The abrupt ending right at the big swell of action is a very interesting way to wrap the story up. Highlighting the MC's faulty view of reality before the floor is pulled from under him helps set things up, but I admit i'm a little disappointed/

we don't get anything explicitly supernatural. Everything can be more or less explained with the MC's mania. I think ultimately it works great to keep it ambiguous, and I can see why this story is so well regarded. I'm going to work through the rest of the stories later. #booksky

Started the king in yellow and the first chapters description of a then future 1920's as on the upswing after implementing whatever deranged nativism the author could cook up is very similar to today, though because this is a fantasy story the government also invested in public parks.

Oh yeah it also mentions a brief scuffle with Germany which...I know he couldn't have known what was going to happen but that's just funny in hindsight.

Expand the power of the executive, deport everyone and shoot the rest and put up a bunch of greek coloumns and empty parks. I've found the earliest statue pfp guy lol. #booksky

Just finished the Misplaced Battleship by Harry Harrison. Fun and quick read, was not expecting a protagonist from the 60's to sassily check his nails in the first five pages but here you go. They even illustrated it.

Also there's a brief line mentioning a "navigator is his tank" and I'm wondering if Dune ran with that idea or what. This story and Dune were published kinda close, maybe?
