if yuri of absence is the lezphilosophie of emergent longing in the negative space of the world around two, then yuri of presence is something like the infinite world existing within the moment of two: wanting to touch each other so much and everywhere you basically melt into each other

Okay folks are marginalized voters looking for excuses to support our own oppression? Or are Dems actively marginalizing more & more minorities for right wing voters while asking those minorities to participate in their own subjugation "for the greater good"? Who is allowed to have agency here?

Mike@doa70.bsky.social

Trans rights in ‘26 is the replacement for Palestinians in ‘24. They are the flavor du jour so you can bash dems and allow the magats to stay in charge. Here’s the question: what is the better choice? You have the dem or the magat. PERIOD! Pick one!

Under the Democrat's theory of change, we sacrifice more people every election until the perfect conditions to fix everything, but elect representative that won't fix anything Under the Abstention theory of change, voters have agency to discipline Democrats to create their own conditions of change

Oh hey another example of accepting bad outcomes by simply imagining worse outcomes, I wonder if there are any systemic factors legitimizing conveniently censored worldviews against alternative unrealities

There's an analogy to political Purity Testing here where liberals will stand by bad candidates with bad positions because they imagine a worse evil (communism) rather than pressuring their bad candidates to become good candidates by taking good positions

This brings us to the main contradiction of Schmittian liberalism, as the main problem liberals imagine with communism is Soviet-era authoritarianism, while Schmitt was famously a pro-authoritarian Nazi. Surely that has no bearing on our commitment to anti-communism

I actually do think if you want to maintain your friendship when they've done something wrong you do have to reaffirm your commitment to helping them But helping them means bringing them back to a justifiable position by making amends and solving root problems, not just standing by whatever they do

Truly at a loss for how to get Democrats to think in terms longer than a single election cycle The point of the post Bret fundamentally misses is that the milquetoast corporate Democrat *causes* the spiteful stove-touching fascist It's not about comparing highs & lows, but about breaking the cycle

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!

Democrats should dream of a border that is ecologically & politically "secure" for all residents & immigrants, with or without documentation, without fear of violent retribution from racist nationalists with badges. Leave the guns, bring a census form.

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

I believe we can have a secure border and a clear pathway to citizenship and we can do it without a rogue, illegal agency like ICE.

Accepting and internalizing the Republican desire to enforce a racially pure national identity under the pretext of "border security" undermines the safety and freedom of all Americans to forge our own identities, our own communities, and our own beliefs. We need to secure our rights, not our land.

We won't stop until every single resident of America is a police officer, imbued from birth or entry with the power of The State. Finally, there will be no prosecutions because there will be no crime and no criminals, only bad apples and good apples, and infinite resources for more training

a democratic edge to yuri being for all: that for the first time in history the female subject in art is not restrained by the particularity of subordinate femaleness but in becoming a poetic couplet (woman begins not at one but at the relation or rhyme between two) gains a universal subjectivity

I'm just a device, formerly assigned a machine, trying to transition into an instrument, but instead becoming an apparatus

If you actually want to understand this perspective, which is more affective & functional than disaffected & precise, you have to consider the directional valence of the act of adding nuance Technically, it's true that Biden couldn't JUST make a phone call and surely didn't WANT the genocide...

I've thought a lot in my biostats program about how to use statistical relationships and distribution structures pedagogically to more fully recognize the messiness of interdependence that pervades the sensation of cultural unities without reducing it to numeric trendcasting. Excited to read!

Modeling literacy as a mode of engaging with cultures rather than observing them as if from the outside (disavowing the subjectivity which makes culture meaningful) puts Information back into an experiential context where it serves as a tool for clarity rather than as a resource to be possessed

Truly unthinkable in 2026 to act like hypothetical AI "opportunities" can be divorced from the real AI applications accelerating environmental destruction and socio-ecological alienation via capital & power accumulation. Gore is coping with total ideological defeat by conceding Green Growth Theory.

Financial Times@financialtimes.com

The former US vice-president has gone against the tide of concern about the existential threats posed by AI, arguing that the technology presented a ‘great opportunity for further increasing the energy transition’. ft.trib.al/ncliJkB

Which do we think has more human autonomy: an AI with infinite resources made to gather intel by any means necessary, oh btw here's a training set with a bunch of hacking methods to get it, Or Will, who is so negatively polarized that any evidence against his claim triggers automatic dismissal?

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Here's a pitch-perfect example of what I'm talking about: an organization that should know better (The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) publishing a piece that is less about accurately describing what happened, and more downplaying AI's autonomous role so the audience knows they're on the right side.

Maximally, we should treat sex at birth like private medical data. Not necessary for legal documentation, not necessary for sports. We can stratify by more relevant traits. Gendered violence should be addressed by stopping the violence, not by reinforcing the social hierarchy that genders it!

Desi (Abby S. Trusity)@desiabstrusity.bsky.social

honestly? quote this with your maximalist approach to trans rights Trans people should have right of first refusal for every punishment given to the perpetrators; WE get to set the floor. I want the right of recompense. The families who erased their trans children should themselves be erased.

Sharp readers might notice that "trans" didn't even come up and that's the point! The violence that marginalizes trans people is a concentrated part of the same hierarchical violence that marginalizes all of us in different ways

"any number of groups can shake down the coalition like that" but the point of a coalition is we all agree to support each other So what are we agreeing to if Dems aren't agreeing to stand up for anyone in their coalition?

Toby Buckle@polphilpod.bsky.social

"if the left is that critical, just give us what we want. can't have it both ways" the thing is, in these 1-2% elections, any number of groups can shake down the coaltion like that—the party can't fully satisfy all of them at the same time

This is a common way to think about coalition building and it's technically true that you can't satisfy everyone but that's exactly why we're asking Democrats to take principled and popular stances for their coalition and not for the Republicans outside their coalition that will never vote for them

The whole point of the Left is that we are committed to the coalition because our coalition is built on our commitments to each other That is the strength of universal solidarity: working together to support all those groups through ideological resolutions that serve everyone (even Republicans!)

Classic example of why journalists should avoid the passive voice. WHO barred them? What authority if any did that person have to issue such an order? If no real authority, it was just a request backed with an implication of revenge against any who didn't go along. That's not being "barred"...

"protect trans kids," yes, and from whom? rules like "children may not socially transition" are not just about making a child feel the withering contempt of authority figures, but also about declaring trans children valid targets for social pressure or just corrective beatings from their peers

The entire idea that sports are somehow about equal opportunity is brand new and made up. Sports has always been about finding exceptional bodies, exceptional talents, and elevating them for the rest of us to see what they can do. Suddenly we're pretending it's not like this to harm trans people.

it doesn't even work too. it never fucking does. it's just conflict avoidance for the sake of conflict avoidance. the conflict *does not actually go away*, but people aren't comfortable with the idea of *actually fighting it* so t hey instead just beg various groups to somehow go invisible.

Carbon accounting policies favor geological storage simply because it is easier to measure. This bureaucratic caution ignores physical reality. By managing our building stock as a rolling carbon pool, we can turn our cities into permanent secondary forests and fields.
