The climate debate is overly fixated on high-tech geological carbon storage. This obsession neglects the massive, immediate leverage we have in the bioeconomy and resource-efficient construction. Bio-based materials are NOT inferior carbon sinks.

It's a very good feed. Important to support the voices of sustainable construction here on bluesky.

Important for the pessimistic german crowd who believe the AfD success is inevitable. Go where the people are, most people want a good future.

So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.

Yes, & why shouldn’t critical infrastructure / civilian defence comprise part of the 3.5%? Have argued similar wrt home retrofit / insulation + electrification. Thermally protective homes backstop health & wellbeing - which in turn have a defence & economic function. Heat pumps = energy security

Martin McKee@martinmckee.bsky.social

1/ NATO countries committed to increase defence spend to 3.5% of GDP & critical infrastructure to 1.5%. @natashaazzmus.bsky.social Jarno Habicht & I argue @lancetrh-europe.bsky.social that health must be part of the 1.5% url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/IbFkCnO14c...

The hemp-lime masonry blocks now had to weather outside for a year. There are not many options left for building in compliance with climate targets. Hempcrete (without cement) is one of the few. Because this is a race to zero, not a race to the bottom.

Michael Burchert@michaelburchert.bsky.social

Ok let's do it. Hemp lime blocks (1 workshop made, looks like its HK80 cement lime and an "industrial" block offcut) exposed in the elements in wet Northern Germany peatland area near the coast. "Test" setup on a green roof. Let's look back in 3 months?

You’re saying that it’s bad for the survival of humanity to tell children for generations that climate-friendly and healthy building methods using🌾 straw and 🪵wood are bad, and that only climate-damaging 🧱brickwork is good.? Yes, that’s not funny.

When I started building with straw, there were only a handful of people doing it. To put it mildly, universities had very limited interest in it. Now that is changing; #strawbuilding can no longer be ignored. But at the working end, there are still only a handful of people doing it. New papers list🧵

For construction: ✅ We need: easy ✅ We need: cheap ✅ We need: abundant ✅ We need: massively scalable ✅ We need: entirely sustainable Straw ticks every single box. Concrete obliterates our needs by removing humans from the planet - no housing required by 2100 if we keep concreting over our planet.

What is your opinion? Mine: Sometimes hemp guys try to adverise their product vs straw building. That is inherently wrong because the real competition is the bad stuff. There is no this or that, we need both, but straw is abundant compared to hemp. Both are renewable materials, thats what we need.

Michael Burchert@michaelburchert.bsky.social

Do you expect hemp to be the choice of engineers vs e.g. winter wheat straw? Hemp has to be cultivated extra, with extra machines, has the better quality + more biomass, has 5 times less calories, is more expensive, is not a by-product, likely needs fossil lime in the likely case of hempcrete?

Wouldn’t it be cool if the land of engineers were known for the fact that engineers live in healthy straw bale houses, which act as CO2 sinks for generations and consume hardly any energy?

If anyone in Brazil needs help making a decision, you can’t seriously elect anyone on this continent as president who takes their orientation from the current US, which is in the process of very successfully ruining itself.

A modern straw house is built with clean, highly compressed, otherwise completely untreated agricultural straw. You can plaster it for additional protection and features, e.g. airtightness. bsky.app/profile/mich...

25 years ago, straw wasn't even mentioned as a building material in the materials science courses for civil engineering at the University of Hannover. I wish that had changed by now, but I'm afraid that today, too, only concrete and masonry are covered.

I wonder if a straw bale shelter (available, fast, efficient, circular, able to be made permanent without breaking the bank) hands on WORKSHOP for humanitarian purposes would be an event that you would travel to Verden, Germany for? Say for a week. I'd need a group of 15+ folks to make it happen.

Built by Nature starts from a position that industry can be a force for change, believing that the way we achieve a transformational shift towards a biobased built environment is by working closely with organisations on the demand side of value chain.

Had a young guy at the kitchen table today who bought a diesel suv for 8k because he could not afford an EV, he said. Just looked it up, EV lease is available from 49€/month. How is this related? Priorities, decisions, path dependencies, so important.

As I read the comments suggesting that I must be rich because I’ve prioritised climate protection, a fully DIY electrified old house, an EV etc ... whilst, dressed in a 2nd hand suit or a pair of carpenter’s trousers with holes, persuading professors and politicians +you to act sustainably. Alright.

You can't clean up plastic once it's in the ocean You can't suck up fossil carbon once it's in the atmosphere You can't (quickly) regrow a forest once you've destroyed it Destruction needs to be addressed at source. It makes no sense to just damage everything and try to fix it afterwards

therevelator.orgWhy The Ocean Cleanup Hasn’t Solved the Plastic Pollution Crisis • The RevelatorGlobal problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?
