Great team effort based on the work of dozens of people through the years!

wsl.chMore time for trees to grow doesn’t always mean more woodAlthough climate warming extends growing season for trees, the rate of growth is the main driving factor when it comes to wood formation.

Another reason why cities should develop bike infrastructures: it simply makes economical sense!

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“According to the finance ministry’s calculations, the cost to society of trips by car is close to one euro/km. On the other hand, every km travelled by bike yields societal gains of 60 euro cents thanks to the health benefits of cycling, transport efficiency gains, & lower infrastructure spending.”

This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.

Short-term exposure to the air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide and ozone was associated with increased mortality in an analysis of 88.8 million deaths in 653 European regions, with differences between sexes and countries, according to a paper in Nature Health. go.nature.com/4eU6bTA 🧪

When it comes to the energy transition I'm a glass half full person. I know: plenty of people would say that's terribly naive. They point to the scale of the challenge. They point to vested interests. They point to hard-to-abate sectors. And they're not wrong. But here's what they miss. 🧵

Maybe the land carbon sink is weaker than we thought. Big implications: "A lower-than-expected land carbon sink would also imply that the land biosphere may be closer to transitioning from a net carbon sink to a net source than current models predict" Randerson et al. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
