(🧵 5/6) The authors highlight emerging strategies for engineering adaptive and context-dependent developmental behaviours, including history-dependent and reversible response programs and rewired root-environment interactions.

(🧵 3/6) Recent advances in single-cell technologies, spatial transcriptomics and synthetic biology are beginning to resolve root development at cellular level and enable increasingly precise manipulation of developmental programs.

(🧵 4/6) Here, the authors discuss how lineage tracing, genetic recording of developmental history, cell-type-specific engineering and programmable genetic circuits can be integrated to understand and control root architecture.

🌱 Summary from the paper 🌱 (🧵 2/6) Root development is controlled by dynamic interactions between gene regulation, hormonal signalling, developmental history and environmental inputs, creating multiple layers of control that can be harnessed for engineering.

(🧵 6/7) He is also a researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology on Plant Physiology under Stress (Brazil) and co-founder of ForCE Metabolomics, a metabolomics facility based in Fortaleza (Brazil).

(🧵 7/7) This review was developed through international collaboration involving Valéria Lima and Jônatas Oliveira from Brazil, and Luisa Wittemeier and Joachim Kopka from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Germany.

🌱 The authors behind the paper 🌱 (🧵 4/7) This review encompasses recent advances in positional ¹³C analysis in plants, highlighting its potential to resolve carbon-specific labelling patterns and provide additional insights for plant metabolic flux analysis.

(🧵 5/7) Danilo M. Daloso, the corresponding author of this review, is a Professor at the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil, where he leads research at LabPlant, focusing on plant metabolomics and stress physiology.

(🧵 2/7) Plants rely on complex networks to use carbon efficiently, but it is difficult to track how carbon moves through these networks. This Research review from Lima et al. highlights how using advanced mass spectrometry to track the exact position of carbon atoms...

(🧵 3/7)...can reveal hidden details of metabolic processes, helping scientists to better understand plant growth, stress responses, and metabolic regulation.
