True, but I don’t think these proposed reforms go far enough. 1 student death, 1 sexual assault should be enough to #BanFrats. Let alone a LEGACY of deaths and rapes.

This article gets at what a non-punishment temporary suspension is for a fraternity. “This pattern looks like a game of regulatory whac-a-mole: misconduct is a structural feature of the system, followed by an annual ritual of disciplining one of the chapters that gets caught.”

cornellsun.comGUEST ROOM | The Whac-A-Mole Ritual of Suspending Fraternities Is Not Working; It’s Time for Deeper ReformsProfessor Young and Professor Hirschman have come together to create a dataset to analyze all known fraternity infractions since 2008. They use this data to call for the restructuring of Greek Life in...

This is the thing! Schools always insist that “frats will just move off campus,” as if that’s an unavoidable problem. Schools have every right to expel every student who joins an off-campus fraternity.

This is really simple, but I think it’s important to state: Banning frat parties keeps the structure of a fraternity in tact. It’s part of why the parties will “just move off campus.” It is VERY different from banning rush and dismantling the organizations.

We’ve seen schools do this before. If this one-year party suspension doesn’t turn into a permanent ban, then it’s just a message to fraternities that they have true impunity. That even the worst, most violent behavior will result in a temporary slap on the wrist.

This is exactly what my perpetrator did in my #TitleIX complaint. It didn’t work.

Nicole Bedera@nbedera.bsky.social

The most common type of false allegation of sexual violence is DARVO complaints made by perpetrators against their very real victims. DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. It’s a way perpetrators avoid accountability by accusing their victims of wrongdoing.
