hi new followers ๐Ÿ‘‹ quick intro - I'm Adina, currently a NASA Sagan fellow at Michigan State, but I'll be starting as an assistant prof here next year ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ my research focuses on observing very young planets and stars ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ”ญ I'm a crafter ๐Ÿงถ, baker ๐Ÿฅง, cat-mom ๐Ÿฑ, and Halloween enthusiast ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป ๐Ÿงช

Important for #astrosky: Overleaf seems to upgraded to TeXLive v2026 in the past few days, and as a result, your aastex v7 / aasjournal v7.1 might be broken. To fix it, go to Overleaf's File > Settings > Compiler > TeX Live version > [select 2025] www.overleaf.com/blog/tex-liv...

Is it just me or did Overleaf suddenly break all aastex/bibtex?

We're back with Part II - A detailed analysis of the starspots on the young solar analog V1298 Tau as viewed with JWST @jwstobserver.bsky.social and LCO led by MSU postdoc Matthew Murphy ๐ŸŒŸ #stellarastro check out the manuscript here ๐Ÿ‘‰ arxiv.org/abs/2606.16782 ๐Ÿ‘ˆ and the big takeaways below!

This is all cool because planets are cool, but what about the spots? Well... Stay tuned for a follow-up paper in the next few weeks where we fully characterize the spots on this young solar analog to see how they differ from the Sun ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒŸ

we combine the JWST observations with contemporaneous g' and r' band observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory, giving us a global view of V1298 Tau by fixing the spots along the transit chords and fitting the light curve, we achieve a global view of the spots on this young solar analog!

for the first time, we find the temperature and the umbral-to-penumbral area ratio of the spots on V1298 Tau are consistent with solar, although the number of spots is VERY different! our work highlights how exoplanet transits can probe stellar photospheric properties ๐Ÿ” similar to Murray+2026!

We observed transits of V1298 Tau cdb and found... a lot of spots. like so many spots. Using fleck, we find the transits are best-fit by ~6 spots per transit chord by measuring the change in spot amplitude as a function of wavelength, we measure the umbral and penumbral temperatures of the spots!

We observed a single JWST NIRISS/SOSS transit of V1298 Tau c. During its transit, we identified SIX (!) starspot crossing events!! We tried to fit the transit using different frameworks to account for the spot crossings (masked, gaussians, fleck, or gp). Regardless of how the spots were fit...

Michigan State's Darryl Seligman discusses how interstellar interlopers and dark comets are challenging our understanding of the behavior and properties of comets and asteroids. Today's lecture is part of the weekly 2026 Spring Colloquium talks at STScI.
