Here is a Claude-assisted animation of the change of daily average temperatures from 1872 - current at the official Denver station. Note again the striking anomaly of the final year plotted (2026).

The Claude-assisted graphic here shows that the overall average temperature from Jan 1-Oct 23 (today) this year is hottest on record for the entire state of CO (top) and for Denver (bottom). The bottom figure goes back to the 1800s.

A bear family pictured here being herded toward me as I was coming down Bear peak by paparazzi following them. That was a tad unnerving since I was sort of cliffed out.

Truly spectacular and a bit horrifying. I really hope the track stays away from populated areas and/or weakens significantly before it hits land.

Wow. What an incredible storm! The sun rises over Super Typhoon #Champi (#RosalPH). Winds at the core are 295 km/h (185 mph), with pressure down to 895 hPa. See this meteorological marvel here: zoom.earth/storms/champ...

We are working on simulating the catastrophic Palisades and Eaton fires of early 2025 (in Los Angeles), and along the way, I was able to use a high-resolution numerical model ("FastEddy", initialized with WRF) to simulate the flow during the time in which the Palisades fire exploded (z=100m AGL).

It may be excessive, but it would be nice to run this daily to better plan mountain outings during windy conditions, and to therefore know which part of the mountain is relatively calm near the surface.

What's going on near the surface?

Well, here we are again, needing to expand the y-axis range... this time for recent Niño 3.4 SST values. 😩 (There should be a blue dot at the end of the blue line showing the latest daily SST value. It's not visible because it's, well, off the chart.)

Me, as Colorado’s drill writer: THIS IS THE YEAR WE’RE GOING FOR ACCURACY

Colorado’s drill has to be so much simpler.

Six years ago on this date, the historic Cameron Peak Fire of northern CO was on one of its more ferocious daily runs due to a windstorm. You can see here the wave cloud above the smoke plume associated with the flow responsible for wild fire behaviors. The view is from north Boulder.

The normal October 10 temperatures at our Bayfield station are a low of 37 and a high of 55. With a low of 55.9 and a high of 88.5 so far…fair to say that today is above average.

🚨🚨 It’s gotten to 88.5°F in extreme northern Wisconsin just a few miles from Lake Superior on October 10. That’s abnormal. 🚨🚨

We wanted to understand the AI proof of Hilbert’s Tenth Problem over the rationals. So we talked to three unvaccinated UFC fans at an Arby’s in Scranton.

On another day of record heat, I chose a running route through the heart of the Cameron Peak fire burn scar. Here is a doleful video of scenes to give a sense of the scale. But to not be completely bleak, I can share that outside the sterilized fire zones, there is a lot of young growth.

This semi-permanent autumn heatwave is getting much less attention than our historic March heatwave in CO, maybe because we’ve grown desensitized to it, but it is impressive. This morning, once again, our temps aren’t far below our normal high.

Drought-affected areas in Europe have expanded substantially in recent decades. By the end of August 2026, meteorological drought affected around 46% of Europe, with 40% of the affected area under extreme drought, a much larger share than in 2025. See more: climate.copernicus.eu/european-sum...

No thermometer on me during this trail run but if it was 70 F at the car, then it almost certainly is in the 70s maybe 80s as I hit an inversion. Downsloping winds, yes, but this is not a healthy climate thing.

NYTimes: We sat down with 3 independent Erie, CO voters at the Old Mine cafe. After the ECMWF has failed to to deliver on precipitation on a regular basis, DOGE checks, and lower prices, they are willing to give yesterday's 12Z ECMWF forecast of rain in Erie another chance.

German chemist Dr. Ida Noddack co-discovered Rhenium (element 75) in 1925. She died #OTD in 1978. She was the first to propose the concept of nuclear fission (1934). Her theory was met with fierce skepticism and outright dismissed by contemporary physics giants. But 4 years later...🧵 #WomenInSTEM

Unbelievable footage from NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Polo. Simply incredible.

The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...
