I help you not get fooled by AI slop. I also help artists be better. Because a world full of human made art is the future we’re all fighting for.

I know it's funny to show how useless GenAI is, but even using it to do that is environmentally unsound and pumps up their usage numbers. People need to start thinking of AI as litter. Maybe the thing you toss on the ground isn't much, but when a lot of people think that way it makes a giant mess.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Please note: when asked to do something other than being an insulting nit wit (which he's been since before I chimed in), the person doubles down on ad hominems as a pathetic distraction.

If AI is inevitable, then why is Anthropic a failure? If you're a progressive why do you insult people over the superiority of Nazi CSAM misinformation generating theft bots? BLM unless they're down wind of cancer causing fumes from data centers, amirite?

Hey look! Some dip with 200x more followers than me was so mad I respond to him he searched my history for some kind of burn. Listen, chuckles, if you think AI is doing a better job than it was when that article was written then I have an 80 billion dollar loss at Anthropic for you to explain.

Extra lols at this guy trying to put all this progressive cred in his bio while most of what he’s doing lately is pushing the most anti-humanist, nihilistic tech as inevitable. Again, while suffering $80 billion losses. Where’s that “weapon of the enemy” batman meme?

What this sentiment really is: this is going to be a very buggy and half-assed jailbreak and it will be near impossible for the low skill hacker who prompted it to provide timely, if even any bug fixes. Just like the vibe coded Adobe apps, it’s funny but not really useable and likely never will be.

A lot of the usual problems with this slop. Why is a child drinking coffee? Why is snoopy in the middle of the road and why is he as big as the cars? But what makes this slop extra funny is some of the prompt text showing up in one of the signs. Crazy arrows indeed.

This was posted on a FB group to start a convo about a new roundabout. Instead the comments descended into a discussion of slop. Be warned when you generate an post this trash. We know what it is because it looks bad and we think you’re stupid because of it.

Honestly, this is odd and the studios know it. The lawsuits over both copyrighted code and assets will begin shortly. And the reuse of uncopyrightable assets by everyone will happen even sooner.

Joshua Rivera@jmrivera.bsky.social

personally think if the line is going to be “no gen ai in anything” then the you might have to consider divesting from AAA games entirely because this is just what the industry is now, whether they admit it so publicly or not

I read John Gruber for about 2 months back in 2007. I had just moved to Mac and was looking tips. It took me that long to realize what horrendous, pro-corporate takes he had. Zero surprise he’s enjoying the Nazi CSAM site.

Sure, I guess. But the reality is these bots are giving men a false idea of what a relationship is like and they’re eventually going to want to impose that fantasy on real women like they do with porn.

AI companies can add privacy controls, they can talk about taking things seriously... The one thing they can't change is the way the technology affects cognition. These products undermine education. They have no place in classrooms. In BC we can vote bad tech out by electing good school trustees.

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

Dinowitz asks a good ? about "A.i." directed at kids, mentions cognitive decline, cheating. OpenAI lady keeps saying "OpenAI takes [X] very seriously." Dinowitz asks if their models can write whole essays for kids. She just says kids under 13 can't use it. Doesn't answer when he asks about 13-18.

This is similar to another meme with Ursula Le Guin. She also didn’t say this. I’m not defending Musk here. The sentiment in both of these is true. I’m defending truth from slop. Elon Musk would approve of muddying reality like this while burning the planet down.

Will it be called "Ladybugs"?

👀 Paramount is pursuing an 8-figure deal for the rights to a Lindsey Graham documentary, which is said to include behind-the-scenes footage of the late senator speaking candidly with David Ellison. The scoop in @status.news www.status.news/p/paramount-...

I asked a young manager at CVS where something was and then could he come and unlock the case for me. He said "no, ring the bell". So I did. And he showed up. LOL, right? I said to him, "in my day they told us waiting in line for goods like toilet paper was communism."

Kevin Gannon (now a Moo Deng fan account)@thetattooedprof.bsky.social

Fellow GenXers: remember how often we were bombarded with images of late-period USSR? Old, decrepit men in charge, clinging to an ossified ideology. Political repression, nakedly false propaganda, empty shelves, food shortages, inadequate health care, deep-seated cynicism, crumbling infrastructure

He then ranted the same story about a smash and grab that I've heard every other drug store chain employee at every store across the county rant off verbatim. The funniest thing is if they ARE smashing and grabbing (they're not), then what's the point of the glass?

I kind of hate how much attention Holmes gets because in the grand scheme of things she’s not that big a criminal. There are much worse male CEOs out there committing worse crimes they will never answer for. If Holmes had just screwed over her wealthy investors I’d actually consider her a hero.

Rotten Tomatoes@rottentomatoes.com

All-new trailer for Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's 'You Can See Everything.' The Elizabeth Holmes documentary is in theaters on October 16.

The thing that upsets me most about her case is that she didn’t go to jail for the very real harm she caused patients. She was practically cleared of that. Her sentence comes purely from bilking the investor class. That says so much about our justice system. That’s the story I’m interested in.

This is a bad way to talk about slop. Yes, process is important and fun and AI robs you of it. But also AI CANNOT output something that looks just like your art. It is inferior. It lacks charm and eye contact and style. We need to talk about how slop sucks at its job and can’t actually replace us.

The “Inconvenient Truth” guy is now for data centers that wreck water tables and pollute air to the point that people are getting cancer. WTF is this world coming to?

Financial Times@financialtimes.com

The former US vice-president has gone against the tide of concern about the existential threats posed by AI, arguing that the technology presented a ‘great opportunity for further increasing the energy transition’. ft.trib.al/ncliJkB

Right wingers and genocide supporters cannot for the life of them attract anyone with even enough talent to draw stick figures and formulate an argument. That's why they embrace AI so feverishly.

I'm probably reaching here, but I would hope that an ad agency full of creatives who care about human made work would deliberately sabotage an ad portraying AI as some kind of humanist tech. I mean, this is right up there with Windows 95 introing to a song about a dildo.

Amanda Bryana@amandabryana.bsky.social

Saw that Meta AI have used a Bowie song and got really angry. Then I saw which one they're using and I can't stop laughing. Does no one listen to lyrics or was "we're going to cause human extinction through the imminent death of the planet" really the vibe they were going for?

It would be really hilariously embarrassing to see the prompt for this, which probably included "make her hot with big boobs." And then they got this absolutely mess and decided to share it? Or did they really think it was accurate?

Q: What's the large muscular organ in a woman's chest called? A: The heart? Q: I'm sorry, Bob. It's the SPLEEN. The spleen. freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2...

i don’t know what the answer is here. This diplomatic tact had no effect on the Ultimate folks or the crowd. They simply dug in and made easy excuses for their AI use.

Cute Monster Props@cutemonster.bsky.social

A week ago at Dragoncon I met Richard Garriott at a panel about his new Ultima game. Long story short he wants to use AI. He already has for concept art and ChatGPT generated fantasy language. I wrote an account with the hope that this could spread to the right people. Please pass this along.

I, personally, would have said “your concept ‘art’ looks like shit. You clearly don’t actually want to do the work to make a game and I don’t want to play a game you didn’t want to make.“ It would have kept the Ultima guys from peddling their soft rhetoric and it may have rallied the crowd more.

My one disagreement with this is that Kamala Harris would have saved us. Gavin Newsom just signed a bunch of industry approved bills into law. I don’t think a CA politician will ever act against Silicon Valley. We need look elsewhere.

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

Expanded these comments into a blog post. These warnings from the A.I. industry are an opportunity, but the opportunity is wasted if we focus only on the solutions they have in mind. The A.I. Industry will never rein itself in davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/the-a-i-in...

It’s AI slop. It can’t make anything original.

Seth Abramson@sethabramson.bsky.social

If you are in charge of designing Space Force uniforms, you have three tasks before you: ❌️ Do NOT make it look like Star Wars ❌️ Do NOT make it look like Star Trek ❌️ Do NOT make it look like the SS How do you fail ALL THREE OF THESE so spectacularly in a single uniform?

Pointless AI generated continuation of the original first, standalone panel. For one, the second and third panels are redundant and don’t flow. One guy takes the cookies and then the second guy takes the cookies. Then there’s the white guy’s right hand on his left arm in panel 3.

Changing the subject from the people who do actual harm and have real power - corporations, politicians, billionaires - to a couple of tik tok kids is the same moral panic BS that centrists use to discredit every legit progressive movement. Just stop, Will. You do good work. Focus on that instead.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

would you call an AI a "wireback clanker" or call someone a "clanker lover"? would say "clankers need separate water fountains"? why do you think there are hundreds of extremely viral tiktok videos of kids saying these things?

I will normally defend Stancil as a good guy that gets a lot of unnecessary shit. But what the kick he’s on of debating whether “clanker” is a slur or not is tone policing on an epic scale. I don’t care if it is a slur or not. It’s a pejorative for something objectively harmful and terrible.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

The argument is that it’s okay to use slurs if there’s no actual person being targeted. There’s also a weird refusal to understand what a “slur” is (a bunch of accounts are claiming “jalopy” is a slur). The idea any of this might be related to people, even if aimed at robots, is treated as absurd.

Why can’t ”jalopy” be a slur under your definition? A car has headlights and a grill in the configuration of a face. It takes you places. People imbue it with personality. Stories are told from cars’ perspectives. People treat their cars like family members. Why are you dehumanizing cars, Will?

Being a racist should automatically exclude you from any kind of power, whether it’s corporate or academic. Your biases have control over people’s fates. I would sooner sign a petition removing Kustov from Notre Dame.

Alexander Kustov@akoustov.bsky.social

This is the first open letter I've signed. I encourage all academics who still care about higher ed's credibility to do it. We're at a crossroads: if we can't uphold academic freedom even for those whose views are despicable, we won't agree on anything else. johnarmstrongmaths.com/openletters/...

And yet you’ve only ever publicly posted in support of the first two. Maybe because you believe in those and the rest is rhetorical window dressing?

Jason Lee Byas@jasonleebyas.bsky.social

Yes, I support academic freedom for racism, eugenics, Maoism, a belief in violence for its own sake, Murder Jason Lee Byas Thought, support for ISIS, support for total human extinction, and whatever else you have in mind. "Academic freedom but just for good people" is not a practicable principle.

Overheard on a nearby beach: a British family on vacation passed me by. The teenage son said “AI photos just sort of glorify…” His mother cuts him off in an adorable working class accent, “I’d rather just not have a picture!”

Random rich people are the ones that push for and back pro SUV stuff. They’re the reason politicians act as they do. I don’t see why it’s wrong to push back against the ruling class. They should have to pay in unexpected ways for that power.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

Banning SUVs is an urgent and worthwhile political goal. Slicing the tires of random rich people is the dumbest possible way to achieve this. Put out a proposal and slice the tires of politicians who won't vote for it!
