To be blunt, you feel X isn't political because I'm guessing you're a cis white male. If you are any sort of minority or LGBT, especially trans, X users will make it political wherever you like it or not.

I think that he's probably right that there are plenty of posts that don't MENTION politics, but he's forgotten that if there's more than one person, everything is politics. Tech doesn't exist in a vacuum. You cannot just talk about LLMs or Apple or even UI design without politics.

Accessibility is a political issue! Energy use and foreign trade are political issues! Wealth and the ability to access technology are obvious political issues. Even if we leave aside what a racist, misogynist, queer-phobic place X is, to pretend that tech isn't political is willfully blind.

I don't think anyone should kill themselves but if I caught myself caring about which websites people used or if my preferred website was cool, I'd kill myself.

I agree the X algorithm has restored a readable experience. But X is not Twitter because if you don’t pay and have ever posted critically opposing views to its owner’s, there is no participation for you. Practically no one will see your tweets, there’s a black mark against your account.

I love going into the comments on X. Takes about five of them for someone to be toxic (stated mildly). I rarely experience that on Bluesky.

I'm sure there were places that felt "remarkably friendly & inclusive" in the Third Reich too – assuming you were the right kind of person & behaved in the right kind of way & were willing to over look a few "slips." But really, why support a fascist & his platform. Should be an easy "Hell no!"

This, 100%, unfollowing, no longer recommending to anyone, at least these enablers are making it very clear how patently immoral they are.

I didn't realize that pointlessly trolling Bluesky users, or boosting a Musk business was necessary. What does this article add. You are gaslighting for what purpose? No one is mad, just disappointed that someone we follow for insightful analysis can't see past the end of his own privileged nose.

Wow, that sucks. I left the moment musk bought it and I haven't looked back. I hope the whole shitshow, along with musk and everything he owns, gets swallowed up by the sea.

I'm not angry. I'm sad. it bums me out watching people like you twist themselves into knots to avoid looking at the Truth of the world. I want y'all to get the help that you need

Most of you are too young to know what a shill Gruber has always been. The fact that his blog is still a thing (I had no idea, but it's existence gave me a chuckle) suggests that he believes that it represents something like a legacy, and that fact is just more sad than anything else.

I've not had anyone send me pictures of ovens when talking about my Jewish grandfather kicking Nazi ass in WW2 on Bluesky. But guess where I HAVE experienced that?

"The culture on X today is remarkably friendly and inclusive." Respectfully, you're an English-speaking, white, affluent, cisgender, straight American male. You're the walking cheat code for privilege in 2026. Of COURSE fucking of course the culture there will seem that way to you. Good lord.

Anyways, when the racist fuckstick literally calling for ethnic cleansing and comparing Romani people to wolves saying they should be murdered is enthusiastically agreeing with your take, maybe just fucking MAYBE you should reconsider your take.

Actually, *that* should be the cheat code for finding nazi stuff (and even more if you follow tech). Because obviously if you frequent 🇯🇵 or 🇮🇩 xitter (or some specific communities) those are fairly insulated from the changes elmo did. But even just if you think democracy is "nice" it isn't inclusive.

The op has got to be getting paid for this. Agreeing with all the far right Nazi pro rape influencers trying to wish into existence that Bluesky is dead? He can leave and fo

Gruber posted this across all his socials. I didn’t look at Twitter but Bluesky has a significantly higher engagement rate than Threads (even though he got ratio’d to death on comments/likes). Threads active user count is irrelevant imo because no one there’s engages on anything

I'd rather be an ethical and moral tiny fish in a less popular social media pond than one in Elon Musk's more popular giant unethical, immoral, right-wing cesspool site.

Angry? Nah. Just disappointed that someone as smart as you chooses to rationalize away the hate, fear, and destructive disinformation peddled every second on that platform. Cheerful? Getthefuckouttahere.

The big draw im missing at twitter is the ceo and svp of marketing for apple having a phony marketing “chat” about pikachu? Is this a bit?

I have started looking at Twitter again in recent weeks. But I do so with an ad blocker on, only on the website, and I don't post or interact with posts. I hate that so many people are still posting there, but it is sadly true that many people I follow never left.

It’s filled with Nazi dorks, and even if it wasn’t you’d still be supporting the actions of a fascist, white supremacist billionaire by going there. “Action” or no, it’s morally wrong to use it.

And it's not just that Elon embraces white supremacist ideology. His cancellation of USAid has killed hundreds of thousands and some estimates project over 10M excess deaths by 2030. Posting on Twitter equates to moral approval of Elon's behavior. Is that worth the 'action'?

Angry? No. Bewildered? Absolutely. I don't post there anymore but I do go back to visit every so often and the place is just as filled with racist, chud trash as it ever was. Every 8th post I see is either wildly stupid or actively evil. So, yeah, I'm bewildered that you don't see it.

I once loved twitter enough to write a book about it. The site became so toxic that I left—and I haven’t missed it. I like Bluesky much better. I can have conversations, not just arguments. And plenty of cat photos.

No matter what @gruber.foo says, X has become nazi playground these days, where Musk and his friends/interest have free fare to write just about anything. Even if it has all the action in the world, I simply refuse to enter in that load of bullshit.

"The culture on X today is remarkably friendly and inclusive. It is a cheerful place" All I ever see on that hell site is arguing and people saying racial slurs, uncensored, while X says "this isn't a violation of the rules" Dick ride Elon harder.

Here’s the main problem I see: “I do think he got bored micromanaging it, but the rank muskiness that permeated the platform after he took over is — for now, at least — gone.” Why would anyone want to invest energy into rebuilding on Twitter when the Muskiness could return any day & be worse.

I mean, correct but, that’s pretty much been Grubers M.O. for like 10 years now. He can’t clear his throat without a thousand words and half a dozen footnotes.

If I walk into a business and it has Fox News on its TVs, I turned around and walk out. It doesn’t matter to me how cold the beer is or how good the pasta is or how good any other aspect of the business is. If they’ve got Fox News on the TV they’re not getting my time or money. Same with X.

Goodbye John. No doubt this will be lost in the general noise and blowback, and not make one blind bit of difference to you, but i've unfollowed you everywhere, removed your RSS feed, and the talk show from Overcast.

not hugely surprising that someone who posts rage bait that doesn’t consider anybody else’s experience on X is finding it a universally hospitable place. a goofy post both here and the original essay IMO.

Hilarious it says that they've de-Musked the algorithm. When I checked it the other day when Blue Sky wasn't working for me, I got a tweet from @America which is Elon Musk's PAC trying to swing votes to the Republicans for the upcoming midterms

I think you should come at this topic from a different angle, namely, what line would Elon Musk have to cross to make you stop giving him ad views, content and influence?

My takeaway from the article is that such a line doesn't exist for the vast majority of Twitter users. No amount of shaming on our part is going to change that. If we want people to stop using Twitter, we need a different approach to lure those people away: a carrot to accompany the stick.

John, I've been reading DF for 20 years and have always respected your insights, but I'm troubled by this take. The crux of your post is 'it's flawed, *but* there's lots of good content, so I'll keep using it' with no regard for the broader consequences stemming from Musk's ownership of the platform

If you personally want to continue using X, I have no big issue with that. But you're taking it a big step up from there; you're using your position to promote X to your readers in spite of everything you know about its history, who controls it, and the real harm it's caused to many people. Why?

It could be fucking Disneyworld on MDMA, and I still wouldn't touch it. I'm not interested in giving Elon Musk a free plug into my life. Why the fuck are you?

Elon REALLLY wants me back on his platform so I can see all the conservative propaganda and get ai ad money in his pockets before the midterms

How irrelevant does someone have to be to not even be harassed on the official harassment app? Deeply tragic. I hope this brings you the attention you so desperately crave.

I got banned from Twitter when I suggested that Musk's compound in Texas gave off Branch Davidian vibes. Such a friendly and welcoming place.

I have all but abandoned my original account, but I want to believe that Twitter has been "deMuskified" as you claim. So I will give it a shot. But my tolerance has been pretty low for Twitter for a long time. And you are sport on regarding Threads if I'm being honest. It's engagement bait 24/7.

"The people I'm hanging out with at this party are so nice that I don't even mind that there's a woman being sexually harassed by a mob of men over there by the pool and a cross burning on the lawn."

Christ, what a shit take. I mean, I'm utterly nobody, so take my opinion as the nothing that it is. But I don't give a fuck how seemingly nice the Nazi bar has gotten for the CIS white boys now that the Nazi owner is distracted by the huge pile of cash he swims in daily. It's still a Nazi bar.

But still you post this, being fully aware of the shit you're stirring. I wonder what is the point of that article I wonder if it was paid promotion I wonder if you just want to throw your image away In any case anyone reading your posts for years might be wondering if you simply lost your mind

Aside from everything else with that site, I just don’t get the need for you to evangelize about it. You are there. Cool. Enjoy. You are like a kid that quits a team sport. You gotta convince one other kid to quit to validate your decision.

This has been killing me lately. Just shut up! (Not you claybird1) Not every weird opinion needs to be expressed. There’s been a dozen posts and articles lately that all I can say in response is, “man you really didn’t have to say this out loud.” I’m not even mad. I’m embarrassed for them.
