Had some software glitches on a new ebike we bought as part of our @iscycle.bsky.social projects. It wasn't working at all, but now that it's semi-working again, it seems to have unlocked as a US Class 3, so the throttle is working, and it goes much, much faster than it should!

Some discussion here recently about the "Top 2% Scientist" list. I think the fact that they officially sell this t-shirt tells you most of what you need to know about the list!

Did you not get the t-shirt????

Dave and Brian from our Joinery Workshop adding gates to the planters for the upcoming #PlayStreetsBETA trial. During pedestrianised hours, people can walk through as usual on the footpaths or can cycle/scoot through using the gap between gates (with the gates providing some visibility through).

In โ€˜Am I taking crazy pillsโ€™, volume 6, I find the rehabilitation of Micheal Jackson wild. So many people saw the movie. My 13 year olds play his music a lot. Doesnโ€™t seem too long ago that we believed victims in situations where allegations were numerous but it's now like nothing ever happened.

Having spent too long reading about vans (for camper reasons), it's notable that the new Jaguar Type 01, noted for being very large, is basically the same size as a short wheel base Mercedes Sprinter. Like the vans that Amazon deliver stuff in (obviously less high) #carbloat #autobesity

Gave a talk in my dept. on the OSF transition. I wrote up a rough script of the session, which could be of interest to others. I synthesize existing resources and provide my own perspectives. Comments and corrections welcome! zenodo.org/records/2306...

I love this idea But it's also something academia does badly, funding for boring things. But I don't know that we need a separate application process for it

Aotearoa, have you all heard about the new Boring Fund? They're fundraising to provide $500 no strings grants to cover the 'boring' things charities need, but often can't spend grants on: printer ink, power bills, accounting, web hosting, whatever. In unexpected* news, it seems like search on Windows has just got a whole lot worse. It now seems to be somehow "AI", but this mostly seems code for slow and not really working...

New study suggests that a shortage of secure bike parking is limiting e-bike adoption. Glad to see this issue getting attention. It's intuitive that people with quasi-secure bike storage might be OK risking a pedal bike, but not an e-bike that's more expensive. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

This is good bike parking. It has angular tubing, which prevents the quiet use of pipe cutters for theft. The racks are also spaced far enough apart to allow for larger bikes to be parked with room for the rider to maneuver while on foot. Also, this is entrance-adjacent to the building.

I had a wild interaction with a support chatbot this morning. It suggested a variety of helpful steps (which I'd already completed), and then suggested I open a chatbot and raise a specialist. I replied, am I not already in the support chat, isn't that your job to raise the specialist?

It actually took me several replies to convince that chatbot that actually it was its agency and job to connect me. Unfortunately, being a banking app, I could not screenshot the hilarity

Who am I kidding? Transformations... naaah. Zero-inflation or hurdle, almost certainly. Negative binomial and gamma, pretty sure Don't make me learn about Tweedie. I can wear a Cardi while I do my analysis if that helps

I am writing an analysis plan for a pre-registration, and being asked to comment on transformations (or be explicit about not doing so).... I really want to write "transformation is for those who have not yet discovered generalised linear models"

I just forgot that some people <checks notes> don't bike, so uh, make zero trips by bike a week. And also some people love to bike a lot, so it isn't going to be a normal distribution

Wow. So my main takeaway from this is that due to CERN's special status, it's relationship with privacy and GDPR is complex, and possibly not a great place to store pseudonymised data #mindBlown

Thinking about the dry weather in Ireland... and that new Shannon-to-Dublin pipeline. 19 of the last 30 days where the flow in the Shannon has been at the legal minimum, so would be presumably no water available for the pipeline?

The pipeline capacity is effectively about 4.5 cumecs I think so would take about half of the water that is currently there, but ESB is obliged to release 10 down the old river way (which I assume is reflected by the floor of 11 in this table)

For enjoyers of this thread on reasons not use ratio outcome variables in statistical analysis, I have a short blog post from 2022 about why dividing an outcome by something like population density doesn't always control for population density: elevanth.org/blog/2022/09...

elevanth.orgThere Are No Magic Outcome VariablesI'm very sorry but I am going to write about statistics and causal inference again. I'd much rather be doing science. I'll make it brief. I was reading a preprint about the relationship between kinsh...

These ratio outcome variables are a plague in the sciences. If your analysis treats 1/2 and 10/20 as the same evidence, then you have discarded uncertainty in the outcome. Model what you measure, not what you construct. Use the denominator as an exposure instead.

Simply put, this is a loophole that needs to be closed. Shops (even reputable shops), should not be selling illegal vehicles with a small disclaimer that they can only be used on private land, and never on public roads, footpaths or cycle paths

Thanks Amy Campbell and the Irish Examiner for reporting my comments on the work of a local amateur web developer: safescoot.ie. This site allows you to check if an e-scooter being sold to you is legal or not. Consumers shouldn't need this. Shops shouldn't sell illegal vehicles. But great work! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

It's a niche thing, but if you read that story about moving a high voltage cable and Dobby's Grave, it's all rubbish. They always planned to tunnel under the beach, and in a different place to the grave, because the cable is going toward an existing power station
