Any downloaded data must have a README (somewhere very obvious) that says how it was obtained and the url etc.

(Additional tip: within the data directory ALWAYS have a subdirectory for raw_data and a subdirectory for processed_data. The raw data should never ever get edited, only read, no exceptions ever. The processed data can be deleted and regenerated as required.)

Another interesting little #DataViz detail by @tldrnews.bsky.social . They often come up with little glyphs or things that I enjoy. I like the way the way these loop back around (vis wise, as well as politically). Though I think the bottom one could have been done in a more consistent way.

Been collecting these since I was a kid and never taken a photo. Probably haven't even taken them all out since the 90s. So if you've ever wondered who is buying enough that places feel they're worth getting made, now you know.

They're a great souvenir because they're cheap but you actually use them. Other than emergencies, whenever books I'm reading always have them. I know the first time I read house of leaves I used the red kite one. I'm surprised I don't remember more book-bookmark pairs.

The predictions are available as a raster here. I'm not sure what standard recommendations are. These are fine to look at and have a play with. Maybe you'd want to wait for peer-review before using in a final, full analysis? figshare.com/articles/dat... #AC #DHS #HeatWave

linkedin.comPredictions of Air Conditioner prevalence in low- and middle-income countries for the year 2023Rising temperatures globally has increased the exposure to extreme heat. However, access to air conditioning (AC) remains unequal leaving vulnerable populations without means of coping with the heat. Household survey data on AC is scarce in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) limiting the ability to identify cooling gaps. This project combines household data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) program with high resolution climatic, socioeconomic and demographic covariates to generate a 5km resolution prediction of AC ownership across LMICs in Africa and Asia for the year 2023.

I'm very excited about this one! First continental-scale, high-res mapping of AC. AC protects against extreme heat but also causes urban heat islands. And until Amber Vayani's analysis here, we just didn't know much about AC distribution at all. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6... #AC #DHS #HeatWave

And if you download them now, I guess you'd want to make sure you redownload after peer-review so that you don't use one dataset and cite a slightly different paper. etc. etc. The actual data has a DOI and revisions would have a new DOI.

'A plausible paper can now be produced in a day, and the process of producing it does not necessarily enhance knowledge, build a resource, train a student, or advance any other goal of biology research' 'we could use this surge to acknowledge that paper counts are meaningless'

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

Some of my thoughts about the surge in AI-generated papers, why this feels like a completely new kind of problem, and what this means for how we evaluate science in biology. Out now in PLOS Biology: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

I just absolutely love sitting listening to music (Panopticon - Det Hjemsøkte Hjertet), reading a book (Gravel Heart - Gurnah) and stunning a beer (don't really care). It's a simple pleasure but a deep one. A real privilege.

Holy cow, this is *amazing* and I highly recommend it to anyone who works with environmental exposure data!

Stats For Bios@statsforbios.bsky.social

Want to estimate the effects of hourly environmental exposures, but only have daily case data (i.e. the normal situation)? Nidhi Shukla developed a method and did a big simulation study to test it. It works pretty well. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6...

We estimate that of the people who are exposed to highs of 40°C, 69%, did not have access to AC. So 690 million people. Unsurprisingly, AC access is higher in richer countries and more urban areas w/ consequences for urban heat islands and AC build-out in the coming decades.

If you fit models with glmmTMB(), gratia 📦 has gained support for these model objects, including glmmTMB's nascent capability for fitting penalized spline terms using mgcv's s() You'll need the GitHub versions of both gratia & glmmTMB to try this out #RStats #statistics github.com/glmmTMB/glmm...

🚨 After 20 years of service, the R-Forge code-sharing platform will be retired. #rstats Timeline: - Until end of 2026: Normal operations. - Jan 2027: Switch to read-only, but SVN continues to work. - Jan 2028: SVN also read-only. Reason: The underlying FusionForge software is no longer maintained.

Oh, great. TIL #RStats sprintf("%03s", x) differ on macOS and Linux; Linux: > sprintf("x=%02s", c("1", "2", "a")) [1] "x= 1" "x= 2" "x= a" macOS: > sprintf("x=%02s", c("1", "2", "a")) [1] "x=01" "x=02" "x=0a" Personally, I'd argue padding strings with zeros should not be an error. Oh well...

Modeling non-response is an example I like to use when arguing that "descriptive" statistics also require causal inference. To describe the population, you have to model what causes the sample. Similar to occupancy modeling in ecology in many ways.

Bit of a wonky post, but here I share a lot about how I’m thinking about polls and polling error these day www.gelliottmorris.com/p/2026-09-15...

My bar for genAI has been for a while "I'll consider it useful when it can fill in a form for me". Copilot, with a lot of prompting and nonsense, filled 90% of a form for me. That's it, I'm in.

I'm looking for doctoral students, postdocs and research fellows to work with on Bayesian Workflow. Flexible starting time

Aki Vehtari@avehtari.bsky.social

ELLIS Institute Finland PostDoc and doctoral student call is open (DL September 21, 2026). You can apply also to work with me on computational methods for Bayesian workflows www.ellisinstitute.fi/postdoc-and-...

Say I've got a train dataset and a test data set. I fit a linear model to the train set and evaluate within-sample error. Then I fit the linear model to the train set and evaluate with the test set (i.e. cross validation). The 2 models are identical and equally overfit. The metric is different.

Stats For Bios@statsforbios.bsky.social

I've probably moaned about this before. Cross validation doesn't control overfitting (your model is still just as overfit). It (tries to) estimates predictive performance without being tricked by overfitting. Big difference.
