Diesel emissions controls have also advanced a great deal in the 21st century (you don't see buses or garbage trucks belching clouds of black smoke anymore) and now a lot of fleet vehicles here have also been turned over to EV or plug-in hybrid

bad air days do make me better understand the motivations of boomer environmentalists who came of age with pre-clean-air-act cities

While we are doing air conditioning discourse, I would like to remind everyone of this great Arthur Miller piece about what it was like in New York City (city of very old brick buildings) before air conditioning existed [Spoiler: it was very hot and uncomfortable] www.newyorker.com/magazine/199...

newyorker.comArthur Miller on Sweltering Summers Before Air-ConditioningThe city in summer floated in a daze that moved otherwise sensible people to repeat endlessly the brainless greeting “Hot enough for ya? Ha-ha!”

like 70% of california politics is trying to prevent a place like this from existing (except with year-round good weather)

Happy Trans Day of Visibility. I know trans people and I know fascists who are making life difficult for trans people. The trans people are pretty cool and I'm glad I know them. The fascists can go fall down a deep dark hole.

ICE is bad. Deportation is bad. Immigration restriction is almost always bad. Armed masked men going into homes without warrants is so obviously villainous that the fact anyone approves it is a stain that will haunt even generous histories of our nation ever after. I am anti-ICE.

This composition had eluded me for nearly a decade, but yesterday I was finally able to capture it. A train rolled through just as the Duquesne Incline was crossing over the tracks in #Pittsburgh, creating a picture perfect winter scene. It was worth the hours and hours I've waited over the years.

I grew up in Milwaukee, what happens when socialists are in charge is that you buy your lawn fertilizer from the government which makes it out of your poop

Alex Baumhardt@alexbaumhardt.bsky.social

This was lazy reporting, and the Times would have done better for its audience exploring why so many Portlanders voted in DSA council. Article includes nothing from these voters. Describing Republicans in Portland as an “endangered species” is a choice. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/04/u...

*guy who just watched a movie about the Romanian revolution on an airplane voice" this whole ballroom affair is just like when Ceaucescu tore down half of the old city of Bucharest to build a palace

also there's a great public park system with beer gardens and 4 year old kindergarten going back for a century and extensive classes for kids and adults from the public rec department and a great affordable vocational education system but that's all kinda boring

also a fascinating piece of local NYC history from an unusual but illuminating lens (about how the Port Authority totally obsoleted the spatial logic of most NYC industrial space & adjacent neighborhoods especially along the docks in Lower Manhattan & inner parts of Brooklyn)

🧵 BOOK REVIEW: 'The Box' by Marc Levinson is all about shipping containers.🚢 No joke; it's the most interesting book about logistics that I have ever read. Its tagline is: 'How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger'. Here are ten takeaways from The Box: 1/n

I think it is good for politicians to live in housing they can easily afford because it means they can take moral stands that may risk their reelection without risking their home It also means they needn't cozy up to those that may employ them (or hire them for "consulting") when out of office

Duffy is not just from Wisconsin but rural Wisconsin and would also soil himself riding a @ridemcts.bsky.social bus, and hates all trains as it is an article of faith among Wisconsin Republicans who also threw away a fully funded Intercity rail service from Chicago to Minneapolis in 2010

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Strongly suspect that Sean Duffy appears to soil himself at the thought of riding the subway for the same reason that it’s a great small-d democratic institution: it’s one of the few places where you routinely find yourself in close proximity to people of all races and income levels.

Why did Milwaukee reelect Socialist mayors for decades? They were fire breathing crusaders against corruption in what was, in the 19th century, an extremely corrupt city, and they frugally and competently administered public services to a very high standard

very hot day bike commute checklist: - thermos full of ice cubes to suck on - ice pack on neck - ultralight clothing from Muji/Uniqlo - slow pace - ebike on high

there's a great book about this
