Our large-scale study of phone bans just came out in Science. We randomized phone-free classrooms for 16,000+ students across 10 institutions in Odisha, India. Students deposited phones in a box at the start of each class, for a full semester.

They're not out there insisting the urgency means its time to stock up on water, tinned foods, candles and wind up radios (to be fair UK has issued guidance and stock levels of 1l water a radios has dropped sharply, I know because I was stocking up). The majority pay no attention, they have zero

2) England is a rare exception. During the 2010s many other countries (including the other 3 UK nations) changed tack, experimenting with ideas like transferrable skills instead of focusing on tried-and-tested disciplines and methods. It looks like those experiments have failed.

My wife is a lawyer. And the 6/8 months old tools they are using is doing wonders to both save time AND challenge e.g. professionals’ due diligence findings, resulting in lower costs and higher quality for the client. One year ago I would not have thought we’d get here so fast

i think also in the realm of journalism, research, and the law, we're getting to the point where - while care is still needed - the concerns around halucinations are rapidly disappearing. im not sure id expect people to like, try and make it work in their own workflows all the time but...

OK, class, can anyone tell me the problem with this research design? Short answer quiz, five words. Congratulations, you know more than the United States' newspaper of record.

I am turning into a bear, enjoying the relative solitude of a low density residential neighborhood. But today, eating at my favorite ramen place, and being offered dark glasses by random people gathering in the street to see the eclipse, Nørrebro reminded me of why dense neighborhoods are special

Seen from a European perspective, on the one hand the US capabilities as a potential defense partner are lower, on the other hand the US capabilities as a potential aggressor are lower. “Fun” times not knowing if this is mostly good or mostly bad…

On one hand our missiles our depleted, which is bad from a national security standpoint. On the other hand, this apparently prevented additional strikes, which Trump promised against civilian infrastructure, so that’s good.

As I said to multiple colleagues in the past years, Italy rightfully refuses to participate in World Cups held in undemocratic and dictatorial states committing crimes against humanity 🇮🇹

That even *progressive* Americans seemingly don't have this instinct is almost as damning about America as anything Trump's done. It makes, say, the partisan gerrymandering both sides have indulged in far more understandable.

Why does planning an essay feel like you're doing all the work before doing the work, Grammarly? Because learning the subject, figuring out what you want to say, and planning out of the structure of how to say it *IS* the vast majority of the work of writing. Any writer knows this. You do too.

Også bemærkelsesværdig at, om sommeren og i weekenden, det er ikke muligt at være i den største by før kl 10:00 hvis man kommer fra den 2. største by (uden overnatning) med offentlig transport. Anyways, elbilen er under opladning

This strip is amazing because exactly this happened this winter, exactly as described, and I am getting teary eyed and missing my kids already while on my way to work.

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.

Of course, the AI answer is wrong. The walled LLM hallucinates, or gives (M365 I am looking directly at you) lengthy, absolutely useless word salads. This leads to frustration, disillusionment, and most importantly divergence of expectations between top leaders and front line workers.

I do believe AI can help all knowledge workers, if used correctly; and that requires unlearning whatever crap hyping AI influencers are spewing out. But how to bridge the gap between CEOs and staff? That is the question I struggle with. So thoughts, inputs or pointers are very very welcome.

But hey - they got a partial answer that is pointing in the right direction already. In 30m instead of a week. And while the org validates/does the deep work, they can start working based on preliminary hypotheses - which are often enough to unblock work streams. This is the leader experience

Now back to the employee. The employee has to do the last 20%. That requires deep competences and precise information. The employee is told “AI is great”, so asks AI (often a walled-in enterprise LLM, or God-Save-Me M365 copilot) a very specific question on a very specific topic, without context

The organization doing the fact finding often does not know the context of the decision space, or even what the decision itself is about. The leader gets a pptx/note, skims it, dives deep into the (few) details that are relevant for the decision, and evt asks for more info. The process repeats.

Now give the same leader access to Claude. In 30m prompting, the leader gets a *good* first draft of a note on topic X based on public data and reports. He/she knows that the note needs validation, and it is only 80% done, and if she/he is good also that the last 20% is the hard part.

They have been sold the idea “this thing can do anything! You just have to try it out!” Before dunking on this, let’s take the leaders perspective and what is their experience with AI. Top leaders juggle 100s of balls daily. Take decisions based on imperfect information all the time

They cannot possibly have the time to get into details and deeply understand *everything*. That is why they delegate fact finding, information gathering and digesting. This is a process that in a large organization takes days at best. Weeks often.

The majority of my colleagues are in the group “I see this stuff can be useful, but I have not experienced getting something consistently good out of it”. The main reason is that they are using the tool wrongly. I do not blame them, I blame AI influencers (including leaders).
