Welcome! I expanded here from the original Twitter, where I've been under the SAME handle👇 for 11 years now. Will be at both places for a while. Sane adults need choice and B plans. Monopoly is bad. Monopoly of a drug addict treasonous oligarch is a danger to us all.

PHOTO: The gaping hole in Kyiv's Southern Bridge after one of last night's Russian ballistic missile strikes on the city. The bridge remains closed for all traffic since early morning, creating a massive transport disruption.

Reality check for the green public transit-loving Bluesky dwellers: in our Age of Big Wars, electric trains, trams and buses are ridiculously vulnerable to attacks on the electricity grid and other power disruptions. Stick to your diesel buses guys, cherish them, ride them, promote them.

Alex Panchenko@alexpanchenko2.bsky.social

NEW: The latest Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv damaged the Southern Bridge and the metro line crossing it [again], Mayor Klitschko posted minutes ago. There will be massive transit disruptions in the city in just an hour, in addition to those caused by the scheduled power outages.

And please buy a car running on diesel if you can, ideally with manually-shifted transmission and high clearance. If you drive an electric vehicle, keep driving it (environment is important) but buy a diesel car as your family's 2nd vehicle. Your next sole vehicle would better be diesel one.

And NO, high-speed rail cannot run on diesel, nor it can't be safely operated during a real war. So Americans can now safely curb their FOMO about other countries' high-speed trains. That era is coming to an end. Rail is a very resilient transport, as per Ukraine experience, but the classic one.

UPDATE: There are traffic closures on not one but two of the three Kyiv metro lines as one of the recent Russian ballistic missile strikes also damaged the Red Line in the same Left Bank area as last week. The Green Line is broken in two as all traffic on the Southern Bridge is closed.

UPDATE 2: At least one civilian had been killed, at least 10 wounded in the Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv BEFORE the most recent one. Russian missiles damaged two medical facilities and a student dormitory in the Left Bank part of the city, as per Mayor Klitschko.

A Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv Ukraine right now. We've heard like 10? loud explosions, mere minutes after the missile threat warning.

Any talks/negotiations about a post-war security arrangement for Europe need to start from the indisputable fact that Russia’s neighbours have an acute need of protection from Russia whereas Russia has no demonstrable need for protection (and it already has nukes for that).

The most bizarre part of the Oleshky humanitarian disaster: there are some hungry AWOL and deserter Russian soldiers hanging around besieged Ukrainian civilians in the city. The Sky News crew reported this detail last week, citing a UA commander on the claim that deserters are a threat to locals.

1/ Russian soldiers in the occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky may be going hungry along with the civilian population. Russian warbloggers are blaming the unpopular and apparently corrupt head of Russia's Unmanned Systems Forces, Yuri 'Toilet' Vaganov, for the situation. ⬇️

Sadly, this civilian-friendly Ukrainian air defense is almost impossible with much faster Russian jet-powered drones - which now constitute at least a third of all RU deep strike drones attacking Ukraine. The jet ones need to be hunted with fighter jets or SAM missiles - and felled ASAP.
